BAS/ESP ETS and ABS lights on

At this time I may have a larger problem than just a faulty brake switch. The three listed indicator lights come on (BAS/ESP ETS and ABS). I also hear a sound like that of an air pump(?) on the passenger side of the engine. I also hear the sound of a pump that seems to be comming from the drivers side, forward, down low at the front on the engine. This sound continues after the engine is shut off. It will only stop when the battery is disconnected. I have power brakes, but not ABS brakes.
Any idea of what going on. Larry

Larry,
Do a search on the topic. It's been talked about a lot. Also you might want to try this.

With the engine running in PARK turn the wheel all the way to the right. Then turn it all the way to the left. Now bring it back to center so the wheels are straight. Turn off the engine.

Next time you start the car the lights should go off if you only needed to align the sensor. It worked for me. I have the same car. Let us know if that fixed your situation.

ALL ML's come with ABS brakes.

Do a search on "brake switch" replacement. It may be the problem.

The ABS light could be caused by a faulty ABS sensor or a bad ABS module which may have been damaged by leaking windshield washer fluid (the ABS module is directly underneath the washer fluid resevoir).

Sound you hear after turning off the engine is the sound from the e-box fan running to keep things cool in the e-box. E-box is located under/behind the fuse box in the engine bay on the driver side. The fan should stop automatically a few minutes after the engine is turned off.

BTW, I've also heard a sound near the firewall on the pass. side although I don't know what it is. My guess is a water pump to keep the coolent circulating after the engine is turned off. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Larry for raising this Issue, and thank you so much for your replies Michilien and Joml. I had the same problem today morning. As I am new to ML I was really worried about this. The lights turned on when I turn the car and its on until I the ignition off. I can also hear a humming sound when I fully turned the wheel to extreme right or left. The ML has done 64,000 Kms.

Many Thanks,
Chacko.

Well wouldn't you know it. My lights are back on too now. I'll attempt to replace the brake switch and report back.

I have these light that came on after I replace my ML 430 brake booster. (autozone $400). we blead the lines and turned the steering wheel all the way to the left and then to the right and then back to center...with no change....still those two lights are on.
can I please have some one chime in on this one ASAP. Im planning a 8 hr trip out of state this sat and this could put a stop to that.
Could it be that its an aftermarket booster? The vehicle stops ok now just lights are on.
Is this a dealership reset if the booster has been removed??
please respond to my email ... [email protected]
thanks

Why would you get a second rate part when the OEM MB part is $443 at parts.com
Someone asked you why you changed it in the first place in a different thread.
It is possible the one from Autozone is not doing its job correctly and causing the lights.
MB friends don't let MB friends buy parts at Autozone.

Stealership wanted $700
I need this car fixed asap for work. autozone had it for $340 plus core charge.
Ive looked online and everyone is remanufactured.
So it sound like it could be a factor of not an OEM part .
The reason for the booster change was because the original failed. hissing and loss of stopping assistance.
now it stops , no hissing. but lights are on!

It is more likely due to the ABS/ETS control unit that is in front of the booster. The problem is people never changed their brake fluid, it traps moisture and the moisture in brake fluid caused corrosion inside the controller. You don't have much choices, but to replace the controller which costs >$1500.

update...went to the stealership waited almost 3 hrs. they ran the codes and brake stop sensor came up. I told them I already changed it several years ago. I would to it. I purchased the part paid $107 for their time and the part. Got home pulled out the old sensor installed new one...could not find the DIN plug in??
It was stuffed up above the wires...HUH?
"Oh Hell NO" ....
I uninstalled sensor, put old on back on THEN plugged in the sensor....
TADAA...lights went out!!
Next scene...Iam calling my mechanic.....
Did you by chance unplug a wire under the dash....."NO"why?
Told him what I did....
"OH (&()^*$ [email protected]! I DID PULL A WIRE....*^%# ! I forgot to plug it in!
Yeah!
lesson learned...don't do late night brake booster change outs. It the simple things that one forgets to do.
