Question Emergency / Panic button on key?

Aloha, I have a 98 C140 and I have the red emergency button on my key. This is only the case because it is a US Reimport. Cars in Germany did not have this button. Does anybody know what happens when I press the button? I suppose the cars alarm goes off? I haven't actually pressed it yet cause I am afraid I might have to take off the battery to make the alarm stop. Anybody know more about this functionality, it's totally unknown over here.

The alarm may have a built in battery backup so disconnecting the main battery may not disarm the alarm.

That would be kickass even though I doubt it. But seems it would be unnecessary either way given what the manual sais.
