Yeah, another new guy with a wheel/tire question

I'm a Mustang guy, so I'll be the first to admit I have no clue what's going on with these cars as far as what fits and what won't.

Backstory: My dad picked up a 96(?) S420 about a year ago for like $3k. It's only got about 40k on it, so that's good, right? Apparently an even older guy used it as his "Florida home" vehicle.

He snagged a set of wheels with shredded tires from a neighbor with the following written on the back:

Ft: 8.5JX18H2 ET35
Rr: 9.5JX18H2 ET35

Now he's asking me what tires would fit the car. Google keeps bringing me to y'alls page and wheel thread, and a week later, I haven't found the right answer yet. I do know the shredded 205s and 215/40s that were on there aren't right.
Hell based on the tiny tires, I don't even know if the WHEELS will fit on this thing.

So yeah...a bit of help please?

Thanks in advance.

I assume the Rim size is 18 looking at the numbers you provided , originals for W140 is 16 inch , if so get 4 tyres 255/45/18 and all your trouble is over . Even good 2nd hand tyres if you find them are cheap at wreckers .

BTW: If you haven't tested the rims on the car yet , make sure the wheel nut bolts fit 1st onto the hub . I recently had a set that supposed to fit but it didn't,. The # at the back of the rim is just sizing & not necessarily means they fit the W140 hub .

The PN I pulled off the back of the wheels goes to German eBay listings of "Brabus Monoblock V".
About the only word on the page I can understand is "Mercedes", so I'm wagering it fits at least some?

PN for reference: 512-958-35.

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for your post.. I'm a mustang guy too, and I have a Fox-Body Hatch-back 91 with 70k miles, and I'm the original owner !!

Make sure you flush out the old collant with distilled water. Use Zerex G-05, or the Mercedes stuff. Change the heater tee, or you could destroy the engine in under a minute on the highway....

Check if they fit what ever you do before you buy any tyres for the rims you have there . Some Merc's have a 1:14 hub bolt pattern , W140 is 1:12 .
Better to be safe then sorry later .

I'm not sure if the wheels will fit the car but I can tell you what tires will fit the wheels. For the front wheels you want to use a tire with a width of 245 or 255 with a sidewall of 40 or 45 and obviously 18 inches in diameter. So that's either 245-40-R18 or 255-40-R18. But if you want a bigger sidewall for more comfort than change the middle number to 45 and keep everything else the same. Preferably you would want the sidewall to be 40 for a nice low profile look. But it's really up to you.

For the back wheels you want 275 or 285 width with a 40 or 35 sidewall. Again 35 sidewall is preferred but if you want more comfort then go with the 40.

These are just typical sizes that you would use in general. You still have to make sure the tires won't rub and also you need to make sure the speedometer won't be thrown off by the different tires

This is a 275/40/18 rear wheel on my ex s500 . It used to touch the fender driving over speed humps ,so OFF they came .

Or you get 275 or 255's (which is the better choice) on all 4's , you dont gain anything except that you have a wider wheel at the back ( that you cant see anyway) ,Wider rear tyres only improve the cornering a little that's all.

All 4 wheels should be the same for better driving on a W140 ,it will never be a Sports car to do doughnuts in ,anyone that does shouldn't own a W140 master piece of engineering , i see idiots all over YouTube (Just to mention)

To Improve the look on a W140 one needs to look into the Offset of the rim & which rim it is , a must have is a 1 or 2 inch rim lip , that will improve it ,click my Avatar to see a pic.

35, aggressive offset, have seen members make it work, but OEM is 47... on MB OEM 18.8.5s.

MAVA, the old mustangs have gone through the roof. Amazing. Saw a CHP mustang on ebay, 88, roll cage and all. No sale at $8500. 86 fuel-injected GTs going for 8, 10 grand...

Everybody had those or VWs (me) in high school, now they are few and far between and in demand.

Sorry, offtopic
