1997 S500 Difficult Starting (video!)

ave a tough time starting her. It sounds like the starter is stuck. I'll crank it a few times and she'll eventually start, but runs really rough. I get error codes indicating misfires on a few coils on the left side of the engine.

If I turn her off, and wait a second before restarting her... she runs like new! No issues and no strange sounds.

I thought with a '97, I'd be free from the biodegradable wire insulation issues, but I'm probably wrong. I'm guessing my starting issue and rough running might be a grounding issue.

Thoughts? I'd really appreciate any help!!

Here's the video. It wouldn't let me drag it into the above post.

If only misfire codes then fuel pressure/fuel pump?

Seems to crank faster than my S420 or S500 but hard to tell over a video.

BTW the KS wiring and CAS wiring is suspect on the late model cars, but it will show up as a respective error code.

KS and CAN wiring? Can you please elaborate?

Thanks!

COuld this be a weak battery that's not powerful enough to keep the starter moving??

Joe is very versed with these cars. He forgets that other members are not so good with the acronyms.

KS = knock sensor
CAS = crankshaft angle sensor, aka, CPS = crankshaft position sensor.

Unlikely to be your problem.

Steve

PS Checking battery voltage is easy. You need well over 12 V with no load. When the starter motor is energized, huge load is placed, but the voltage should not dip below 10V. I went through a starter ordeal myself not too long ago:
