Side mirror / wing mirror glass replacement

Hello all,

Has anyone replaced just the glass in their side mirrors?

The mirror is cracked on one of my mirrors, can anyone advise me how I go about replacing just the glass if it is possible?

It is a heated mirror and I am a bit worrried about damaging any clips or unseen catches that may hold it in place.

A recent post described how someone managed to damage the plastic on their cluster instrument panel and I don't want to attempt it without knowing exactly what to do.

Sorry if this is a simple task but better to tackle a task informed rather than not is my philosophy.

Thanks in advance.

PS Do I need to buy a specific mirror as it is electric and heated?

Yes you can replace just the glass.
Assuming you're talking about your '98 S280, so this should apply to you. There were two kinds, and the newer ones started around '95 (very approximate).

This was my driver's side (LHD), which had both heat and dim features. I didn't want to spend $$ for that replacement just yet, so I got the heat-only, knowing that I wouldn't be able to connect it up. There is none that is "no-heat & no-dim". I just wanted a mirror that actually mirrored things, because the original one had darkened-up (before I bought the car)- I'm sure that was the "dim" feature that went bad.

i haven't tested them for fit and finish though. but when somebody feels cheap (or rich whichever), let us know. i would but im lazy taking the mirror apart just for that

vw phaeton. when vw copies mercedes, but forces you to service it next to golfs and jettas

gyrate, I think you're right, but aren't they for earlier 140's? I know those connect to the motor in a totally different (read: incompatible) manner.

I had extra motivation to change mine / take it apart, 'cause my wires had some bad bare spots, and the mirror wasn't cracked, but so dark it was essentially useless. My right one's wires are just fine!

I don't know. Like i said only way to find for sure is to buy and try. Can't depend on sellers/retailers giving you the right information.

my mirrors are new and my no fog glass is already delaminating. pissing me off just thinking about it.

but im burried deep in projects and it's not on the agenda anytime soon. if somebody else has tried it chime in. curious to know

My '95 mirror, with only heating and no dimming was easy to take out. Didn't have to take the housing off or anything. All I had to do was use a flat plastic wedge to pry the mirror off. It's that simple. As per alldata directions, you just simply pry and it pops off. The hardest part was putting it back on because you basically have to "pop" it back on, which involves PUSHING the new mirror against the housing with a lot of force. Very scary when pushing glass lol

Anyways, it is tricky. The center of the mirror there is a plus [ + ] joint that holds the mirror and allows the mirror to move left right up and down. What pushes the mirror up and down or left and right are these 2 small little ball joint "arms" on the sides. You'll notice you can easily push it in and it'll make the zipping sound like if you manually moved the mirror with your hands. And yes, these two "ball joint arms" (sorry I don't know the technical term) do have to get mounted on the mirror glass too. So you have to also push the damn mirror to pop the ball joints into the mounting points. There are 2 respectively, as well as the damn "plus" joint. It was a pain in the but to re-mount. But it will be easy if you're not scared the glass will break.

Also, if you are going to buy your OEM glass from Autohaus, you can forget it coming with heated mirrors. For ~$80 I was hoping they were heated. Autohaus doesn't seem to carry or mention any heated mirrors, but I assumed it was heated (my bad). Anyways, ebay sells heated ones for ~$60. I felt jipped, could have gotten heated ones on eBay for cheaper, but I was afraid eBay glass wouldn't have the blueish tint to it like the OEM ones. Right now my mirror just has the plug for heating sitting in the housing collecting dirt.
