Depending on how quickly you will wear them out, their age could be a factor on useful life.
Seem to recall a tire thread touting virtues of a Sumimoto (sp) that was reasonable $ but had the 100 "weight" designation.
Those Primacy tires are at least 1 1/2 years "old" They are presumably housed in a warehouse in Ohio at a wholesaler/dealer.

I would NOT wear them out quickly, I only drive about 5K miles a year. I suspect since they are not "fresh", they may not perform like fresh rubber, but they have to be better than the dry rotting tires presently on the vehicle.
And since I intend to SHOW the vehicle, these would be somewhat period correct for the vehicle, if that matters.

The reason I'm hesitant to use anything other than Michelin's is because so many forum members and techs who work on these Benz insist that ONLY Michelin's are "recommended" for them. If you notice, the MB dealers only sell Michelin's(at least the 3 dealers I have visited).

I'm not certain what you mean by "100" weight designation on those Sumitomo's, sorry.

Thanks for the thoughts on the age of the new tires, I did consider this, and was hoping to get some additional dollars shaved from the price, no luck as of today. My dealer is saying he's certain Michelin will be offering a rebate this spring, but he can't be certain these tires will still be around at that time.

Had the 1994 S420 aligned and the front tires balanced, as the left front was showing some wear on the outside edge and there was a slight shimmy in the steering wheel.

Alignment was out of spec, surprisingly, and the right front wheel was 1-1/2 ounces out of balance.

Drives like it's brand new now. Thank goodness, as I had visions of one of the front tires losing a belt....

I was at a club event the other day and got to looking at what rubber people were using. Stuff ran the gamut from performance to low ball. I did not see much Michelin, mostly oriental rubber that was reasonably priced and proper size.

I unfortunately have 20" Lorenser wheels that cost the PO a fortune. I needed tires when I bought the car and installed Continentals. I was under the impression that Continentals were used on most German cars. Anyway, I got a set of Extreme Contacts and love them. Quiet, grip like crazy and show no wear after 6K miles.
I think the "100 weight" thingy is a reference to the sidewall construction. On these heavy cars you want that number as high as possible. Think of the load that is on the sidewalls when you take a corner "con gusto". I want those suckers to be bullet proof.
Unfortunately there are not too many choices for us.

LRC - weight rating as in the designation:

235-60-16 "100"H, the specs of the Primacy MXV4, 100 LRC(1764 lbs)

If you ask Michelin for today's(2016) recommendation for that tire spec, they offer "Defender" and "ICE x".

I have a 2011 328i X Drive BMW with Continental Conti Pro runflats. I'm looking at 2014 BMW X1 with Goodyear runflats.

From what I see, these manufacturers are all over the tire map with original equipment suppliers. Then you read forum threads about tires and WOW, things get weird.

I naively ASSUMED that Michelin's are THE tire most Benz owners are running, based on my lying eyes. Now I'm thinking it's every person for themselves in the tire marketplace, and there isn't probably much difference between brands at certain price points.

One thing I do know, tire people spend a lot of money on advertising.

@LogicalPosition , I am currently running on the Sumitomo in the link below from tirerack. I am very happy with the tire performance compared to the Michelin that came with car.

One and one half ounces is a lot of weight IMO. But as long as it drives well...

Slipped or damaged steel belts can also show up as left and right movement(swaying) of the vehicle while creeping on flat ground. At speed it will often sound like a flapping noise.

If you go to Tirerack.com or Discountire.com and click on their "information" page there is all sorts of info on tires. They have simplified the "load rating" to SL or XL. XL is my choice for these heavy cars.

First day with the S320

My eBay-bought 1994 S320 white/beige arrived on a truck this morning from Arizona. It's a one-owner (!) with 119,500 miles; looks pretty good and is fairly clean, but, of course, it has issues. So, I took it to my fave indy Mercedes guy and had a proper PPI done. I ended up with three pages of a to-do list! It has only been driven 2000 miles in the past two years, and only 10K miles in the past 6. The carfax is incomplete but it shows a cylinder head replacement and a wiring harness replacement, so that's good news. The vacuum systems seem to be working, the seats work, the sunroof is slow, the very dark tint started to come off of the driver's window, so I pulled it off totally. All of the HVAC seems to be working well. The cruise control lever is extremely loose but it works; sometimes over bumps it sets itself on new (unwanted) speeds!

Today I got to look under the car while they had it up and saw how nice and CLEAN it is. There are some small, various leaks which I'll get caught up on. However, the tires were from 2003 and were dry-rotted. So, I bought some inexpensive tires so I can drive it safely until I can afford some decent ones. Also, a new battery installed and new wiper blades. Next up: replace control arm bushings, valve cover gasket, monobelt and belt tensioner.
