Rear view mirror and side mirror freak out!

I just took my car through a car wash and after I got out the driver side mirror and the rearview mirror started to dim and un-dim rapidly. Now the side mirror is a bronze color with what looks like bubbled going through it. The rear view mirror is dimmer and has a brown puddle looking thing going through the middle. Help please!

Once you get the "Brown Haze" the mirror is shot as far a as the dimming is concerned. I find it interresting that the outside AND inside went at the same time. My drivers outside mirror went bronze and I'm waiting until summer to change it out. I think the mirror glass alone is something like $225.00!

Getting there in a W140 is only half the fun....
the return trip is the other half!

OK, this had got me thinking (a dangerous pastime, I know). My rear view and passenger side mirrors are the standard bluish color and auto-dim. My driver's side, however is a yellow/amber color. The mirror glass itself is perfect and without any splotches or irregularities that would cause me to think it has been damaged in any way.

Does anyone else have a driver's side mirror like that or have I been driving around all this time with a broken mirror?

I suspect this is more common than we think. A lot of times people just don't notice the color change, or it was like that when they got the car and thought nothing of it. I have seen pictures of some type of fluid leaking out. There aparently is a seal which breaks and lets air in. This past winter we had some sub zero weather and the affected mirror really looked strange then.

Regarding bobs' comment - I recently discovered the same thing, i.e., my inside and passenger side mirror are the blue, auto-dim, but the drivers' side exterior is a yellow/amber. I didn't notice until a friend pointed it out. Now it's all I notice. I clicked around online, found replacement auto-dimming glass for ~$350. Didn't get down to nitty gritty and verify applicability, but it made me think that probably the mirror glass was broken at some point (I'm the second owner) and the original owner didn't want to spring the $300+ for auto-dimming, so went cheap.

But now, I'm not so sure. Mine is a '97 also. Coincidence...?

Hmmm. Interesting. I think I'm going to swing by my dealer today and ask them.

Same on my 97 model. Yellow left side mirror. However, I believe that the autodim is functional.... Or, perhaps it may be that it is damaged and permanently "autodimmed" and I just didn't know any better since it's been like that since I've owned it and it's not too dark for daytime use.

definitely, hmmmm
