Hi i have a 1991 560 sel that had a dead transmission so i decided to do the swap myself . I have never done a transmission replacement before but am mechanically incline so i figured "what the hell". Long story short i was able to swap the tranny out but when i go to start the car it runs rough almost like its misfiring!? Before the tranny swap the engine was mint,it idles at 800-900 rpm which is good but when i go to accelerate the car studders and struggles to rev ?? i was told perhaps i installed the ring gear on my flex plate wrong , i guess theres little holes that need to line up ? if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be amazing.
Bummer! Yes, the flywheel has to be properly keyed to the crankshaft. The crankshaft position sensor reads signals from the rotating flywheel and sends them to the EZL, telling it that the engine is rotating, where tdc is, and to fire up the fuel pumps and to set the ignition/timing, I think. If you have the flywheel in the wrong position, the computer will be confused and the timing could be off.
Take a look around the internet. I THINK I read that you can just back the trans out a little and reposition the flywheel. Not sure about that.
Thanks for the info luckymike I think that’s exactly what’s going on with my sel . It feels like a misfire or timing issues . Ok so I got to pull the tranny again great! I’m going to attach a photo and could you tell me if that’s how it looks when it’s keyed.
I'm afraid I don't have direct experience with this but in reading the last page of section 03-430 of the manual, it looks like your pic might be right.
These pics are courtesy of member liviu. The holes to be aligned are clearly visible in the pics. We were able to line them up without removing the trans again. If the ring gear and flex plate are not lined up, remove all the bolts from the ring gear turn the crank clockwise so the hole in the flex plate is at six O’clock position then line up the hole in the ring gear to hole in flex plate and secure the flex plate to the ring gear. Believe me it’s doable.
Thanks a bunch man ! I definitely didn’t line up my holes correctly. So what your saying is undone the 3x 10mm bolts and the 6x 13mm torque converter bolts and turn the engine until everything is lined up? I’m having a hard time picturing how this is going to work exactly without separating the transmission from the engine a little .
Once you remove all the bolts from the ring gear, it and the crank will be free of the torque converter. At this stage turn the crank from the 27mm crank bolt clockwise until you see hole in flex plate. Then rotate by hand the ring gear to line up the hole in the flex plate. Do not forget to fish out the three nuts that will fall to the bottom of the bell housing. Those three nuts and bolts are only there to ease assembly. I left them off with absolutely no consequences. No need to separate. There is enough play in the torque converter to allow movement for what you need to do.
Yes. The flex plate only fits the crank shaft one way. Line up the holes to ensure the ring gear is correctly clocked to the flex plate and hence to the crank.
Ok great , I haven’t been able to start the process because I have strep throat so I’m out of the game for awhile. Which sucks because I’m so eager to work of the car
Ok so I have ran into a problem the 10 mm bolts that I need to remove won’t come out . The nut In the back just spins with the bolt so nothing is actually coming loose . Any ideas what I should do ?
Is the bolt loose enough to maybe jam a thin straight edge screwdriver under the bolt head to exert some pressure on the nut on the backside so that it doesn’t turn when trying to unscrew the bolt.
wish you well on removing. trust that you don't mind asking a related transmission problem.
whilst you are discussing the alignment of flex plate holes; I need to ask the forum if the alignment of holes is also important on a gen 1, 500 sec since there is no TPS ?.
On a gen 1 transmission installation, I cannot recall even looking at the alignment. when all was installed , the car was good in 1st gear but cuts out as it is about to change to second gear.
could the alignment have this affect on my problem?
Guess I just got lucky with mine. I guess you’re not able to push the torque converter back a little. I think you said you removed the six torque converter bolts right?
Yeah I already removed the torque converter bolts . There is no pushing it back some only forward . I am almost done with the process of removing the transmission tho. I send pics when I expose the ring gear and flex plate
You might have had enough room to get a shorty wrench inside the housing and behind flex ring by accessing through the plate in the upper area on the driver side. I am working on my transmission and notice this area appears big enough to give you what you wanted. See picture.
Great news ! After putting everything back together and clocking the flywheel to the crankshaft I turned on the car and everything ran like perfect . Thanks for all the help and advise .
That really is great news! Good job and congratulations.
