Christuna , you seem to know specifics about asbestos locations in specific parts, where have u sourced this information ? Is there any literature on the Asbestos use in these parts?
I got it from the service manuals, parts catalogs and just general reading

for example here on page 4:

http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/M...03/14-3915.pdf

after july 1990 they stopped installing exhaust manifold gaskets with asbestos (that's for M103 your engine is a M116 and I can't find info for it maybe it's somewhere)

To reiterate - all of this is a great discussion but matters not. Contact the customs people in Australia and find out exactly what they are looking for. It might be that the car is old enough they don't care. If they care, they will have a list of what to inspect, which is *exactly* what you need to get.

There may be asbestos around the cross balance exhaust connecting pipe to protect the inner engine wall from getting hot or stray cable from being burned. This is open to the engine air. Asbestos is only released into the air if the padding is whacked or cut and there is probably a layer of engine grease sealing it in even more than the sealed cover material. Otherwise, there is no asbestos dust anywhere. This issue does not bother me in the slightest.

Very old break pads pre-1997 might have asbestos. That's a long time to go between break pad changes.

Hi. Saw your post. I just shipped a car from the US to Sydney. The asbestos certification was included in the shipping cost. Had they found asbestos, they would have remediated it by replacement. Happy to talk privately if you want.
