Center vents intermittent

For my 1991 560sec. My Mityvac pump hooked up to the Gang of Four tells me I need the diaphragms in #38 defroster pod and also #42 where there are two pods also need diaphragms see schematic below. Im hoping the pod that is visible behind the climate control panel is the defroster pod. Can 281lxm, liviu, John350, Wooky Chewy Baca or anyone whos replaced the defroster pod please confirm this.
Id really like to just replace these three pods and not go replacing all of them because maybe their all the same age. When and if I have more or all the rest to replace at a later date then that will give me another reason to tinker with my baby.
Thanks in advance for any and all advise/response.

I replaced the center vent vacuum pod though the vents, with some long hemostats and a long screwdriver. The vent blade assembly (the directional vane thingy that is used to direct air) comes out easily, then while the replacement isn't simple, it can be done without disassembling the dash.

As stated in the thread my question is simply to replace the defroster pod. The fresh/recirculated air pods Im, pretty sure I have to remove the passenger air bag to replace.

I believe the center vent pod *is* the dash & defroster vacuum motor. Could be wrong (been there many times). What say the experts??

my darn center pods just went out....15 yrs ago has them replaced...i wonder if that is typical life span

i like to drive with ECON on just to get some air in the car...and run AC obviously when too hot, even tho my system is full of leaks.

Anyways, is there a way to just rig the pods to stay open, if i dont need to have defrost/ or heater options ever used?

If you look at the schematic in my first post #40 is the pod for center vents and #38 is for the defroster.

There's one of them that's all the way under and is a total bitch to replace!

I did mine when the unit was removed.

I believe (a guess) that the pod straight back in through the dashboard center vents is your culprit. It's (thankfully) been a while since I've been in there but it might be possible to make a hook out of coat-hanger wire and pull the pod's arm into the position you want, then bend the outside end to hook it into position.

You can do all of them with the dash in but its difficult. The glovebox, radio, heating control and drivers side panel has to come out. There are write ups on it
