Preparing for failing electronics

Dear fellow enthusiasts, as our beloved 126 cars are starting to come of age, engine failure will often be caused by a faulty relay or the malfunctioning of other control units with a circuit board. I was thinking therefore of keeping in my 560SEC a set of components that, if faulty, would render the car completely inoperational. One that comes to mind is the fuel pump relay that can easily be replaced if it stopped working. Do other members have similar "emergency kits" on board their vehicle and what other components would they recommend (overvoltage protection?).
Thanks for your suggestions, tempur

Yes I have a "kit" that has the FPR that I replaced, it works most of the time but has cut the engine off momentarily (better than not having a spare), and EZL (ignition control on the fender well), and a brand new voltage regulator. I need to get a spare OVP can just in case.

Dear Wooky,
Thanks for these helpful suggestions. So if either the FPR, EZL, voltage regulator or OVP fails, the engine will shut down?

Yes, all three of those will render the car inoperable. The crank position sensor will also kill it.

True but, I don’t think you’d be replacing that on the side of the road. The one for the ignition control module EZL sits on the bell housing and not easy to get to.
