My new 1989 JDM 420SEL

So I figured I'd start a thread and begin chronicling my repairs and progress on my newest project.

This one came from a friend of mine that owns a dealership. He had it sitting in front of his shop and some thieves came along and cut the cat out of it. I had previously expressed interest in it and after some back and forth he agreed to trade it across for a 1983 733i I had been bringing back to life. This is my first V8 Mercedes, as well as my first gas powered w126, so I'm rather excited.

The drive home was rather hilarious, I temped up a pair of exhaust pipes with some flexible tubing. Naturally it was quick hack work and leaked badly. It sounded like a race car and was stupidly loud. Never the less I made it home and gave the outside a quick wash.

The paint has some swirl marks and the clear coat is failing is a few places, but I'm hoping that a cut polish and a good coat of wax will brighten it up a bit.

So far I've got to work on fabing up a new exhaust for it. I use the term fabricating loosely as my work is less than stellar. I was originally just going to source a used one off of craiglist, but it turns out the JDM system is different and the NA spec one won't bolt up.

I welded in a new O2 sensor bung on the drivers side downpipe as the original one was in the section of exhaust that was stolen. I then used some flexible exhaust tubing and band clamps to span the section that was cut out. I had to weld in some new pipe on the rear section as the old stuff had rusted off of the kidneys. I plan to eventually build a system using solid pipe, but for now its drivable.

My other half has the car out at the moment so pictures of my hack work will have to wait, in the mean time I need some help.

The JDM cars have an Exhaust Temperature sensor on the CAT that the NA spec cars don't have. Naturally this got cut off when the idiots stole the cat out of it, along with the O2 sensor. The O2 sensor was an easy fix, I just spliced in one of those universal ones for now, the temp sensor however is giving me issue.

I'd like to just remove it, however I can't find a wiring diagram anywhere! I want to know if it just triggers the warning light or if its tied into the injection system somehow.

I can't find any mention of the stupid thing in my EPC, service manual or in my WIS\ASRA. Although I'm a complete novice with WIS. How MB techs find anything in it is beyond me....

I can't even find a replacement for it online. So if anyone has any info regarding it I'd be eternally grateful... Or if they could direct me to the appropriate place in WIS.... Even better yet supply a wiring schematic

sad.

I believe those cars had 2 types of cats:

1. north american (maybe japan too) for single exhaust (drivers side exhaust goes to passenger side to meet with the other manifold and goes under the car as a single pipe to the cat).

2. euro or rest of world: each manifold goes down and you have 2 inlets to the cat.

also before you start doing many miles in it you should:

1. Check/Replace camshaft plastic oilers

2. Replace upper timing chain guides and maybe the chain itself and tensioner (plastic guide breaks, falls between the chain and the sprocket and the whole thing breaks and bends your valves)

I have the Euro\rest of the world system with the two inlets to the CAT.

The plastic oilers and checking the chain guides are on my list of things to do. The car was dealer serviced before I got it as I have a stack for $$$$$ of dealer receipts. There is no mention of having the Chain or guides done, but I'm still hopeful.

wiring diagram for us models: https://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/.../126from86.pdf

yes this fuel injection needs o2 sensor and even without a cat it should work fine because it reads before the cat and afaik these cars only have 1 o2 sensor.

Guides, Chain and Oilers were never recognized by mb as issues so I doubt a dealer would do them. Maybe indy would.

Agreed, and I have welded in a new bung and installed a new O2 sensor. It’s the damn exhaust temperature sensor that’s giving me the issue.

FYI: I removed the cats from the old exhaust of my 1991 560sel with 63k miles. (I replaced that old exhaust with a southern car OEM full exhaust).
Long story short, the cats that were cut off are fine/work fine/low miles/not rusted. If they work on your car/engine, and if you are in need of cats, let me know. Will sell/ship for whatever fair value is

Thanks, but I'm probably not going to put CATs back on it. I don't have emissions testing or inspection here so I think I'll keep the few ponies that I may have freed up.
