Interesting take from Magnaflow rep on Cats

I inquired about the replacement for rear muffler and resonator on our cars, as well as cats. I asked about a dual in/dual out vs separate cats on each pipe, and he recommended two separate cats on each side (four total). I asked why, and he said if only running one per side, the "check engine" light may come on and we would need to tune the motor/ECM. Has anyone experienced this? With as many of you who have removed cats altogether, and I don't think anyone has said they have two per side, just wanted to see what those with firsthand experience say.

Also, the resonated internal x mufflers #11385 (14in) and #11378 (11in) were recommended as before. However, they said the longer one can be used in the middle in place of the kidney beans for greater resonance reduction. Has anyone done this? I think Kim's has the longer one on the rear, like what Bob did on the show. Also, The MEC system from Germany looks to have a version with the longer one in the middle as well.

Maybe newer MB's that run 4 cats with sensors pre and post, but the w126 is a totally different animal. (In that it doesn't take too much in terms of cats compared to say, a w210 e55 with its 4 cats!)

A California w126 to make surefire past smog, on a gen1 euro, a pair of small turbo cats after manifolds, then into a 2 in 2 out. For gen2 560's, a 2 in 2 out cat usually suffices.

Which rep did you talk to, someone in the SoCA headquarters? If so I'm a bit surprised.

I'm sure vdubpower will chime in shortly on his take.

I corresponded with Cody. So no benefit of a separate cat per side vs a dual in/dual out unit, and nothing to worry about with the check engine light?

Also, the donor engine is the same M117 as in my '87 except from a '91 CA car. Are there any built-in differences that would stymie performance over a non-US 5.6 engine?

The wheeler dealer episode is totally useless for CA residents as it doesn’t use a CA Legal cat . I’ve posted the CA legal dual cat magnaflow makes for the w126, you need to search their site by 420 sel and not 560sel.

Look for 48hp aka Henrick's old exhaust system thread, front to back stainless with pics. TRY-Y's. 2 in 2 out cat (is supposed to eliminate the need for a cross pipe), elimination of the sideway 'kidney' resonators to use 2 staggered in line hush puppy resonators. A nice solution.

Btw, a little bird told me once that the majority of cat cores are supplied / bought from a Corning division, never mind the cat's brand.

^^ Makes sense.

CNC cut the "stuff" to fit then die stamp, repeat for 120+/x makes and their different models. Sounds like they've got the market cornered....
