New W126 Owner

My new to me 1990 560SEL arrived today. As a one owner, California car, it's in fantastic shape with just over 42k miles. I took it for a quick spin to have the state inspection done. More photos after I've had a chance to wash it once it warms up a bit. While I'm comfortable doing some of the basics like plugs, cap, rotor, etc, for those in the Austin area, where do you take your car when leaving the work to the professionals?

Welcome to The Machine sbpsu354, that's a nice looking ride there and low miles too Don't let the "Star" or the name "Mercedes Benz" intimidate you as far as maintenance goes, these cars are fairly simple to work on once you read up on and figure out how they are put together PLUS you have many knowledgeable and experienced folks here to help out where we can, tips, tricks, and such. You can pretty much bet that any issue or maintenance item(s) have been done by someone here, they will be in the "DIY" thread near the top of the page. One thing to take a peek at, mainly due to the age of the car and not mileage, are the rubber fuel lines under the hood. Check for age cracks and stiffness (these were the first items changed on mine after I brought her home)

Again, Welcome

Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints

Thanks for the kind words! The previous owner was said to be a Mercedes Benz club member and this was his pride and joy. The Carfax showed the vehicle had been driven 1500 to 2k miles each year, so it didn't sit for long. The selling dealer installed new dunlops, front brakes, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, the accumulators for the rear suspension, an oil change, front shocks, and a few other things. The rubber in the front suspension doesn't look 30 years old, and the interior is fantastic. The leather is still soft, the carpets aren't stained, and the orange text in the cluster is still deep. The wood surrounding the window switches has a couple of cracks, but that's the only challenge I can see in the interior. The fuel lines are on the list if they haven't been replaced yet. I was the owner of an 86 420SEL for a month or so and it arrived with leaking fuel lines, so this is already on my mind. I hope to have more time next weekend to give it a wash and go through it in more detail. More pics after the first wash

Congratulations @sbpsu354 It is a great looking car with excellent miles. Can't wait to see more pictures of it.

I live in Hutto just north of the Austin area. If you go the dealership route, MB of Austin on Airport Blvd has been great to owners of older models. There are a few independent shops in town. Chuck The Mechanic has been used by a few fellow W126 owners I know with decent to good results. I got the cold shoulder from from German Auto Center when I went there to get a power steering pulley removed but I do see an occasional older Benz in their parking lot. Haven't used European Motorwerks but their reviews are 50/50 on Yelp.

As others mentioned above, we highly encourage you to do as much regular maintenance as possible. A lot of this stuff is easily done by any competent DIY mechanic and if you have any questions, the community is here to help. Going this route will give you a wealth of knowledge of your car and save you lots of money as well.
