1984 500SEC EURO

I have a problem.
I own this 1984 500SEC that I allowed my grandson to drive to school. He blew the engine. It has low compression, blow by and steam blowing out the tailpipe.
I am now 75 years old and am not going to pull an engine---I don't think! So. I will either part this thing or sell it to someone who wants to have a nice driver after an engine swap.
It's been a daily driver for the last 4 years or so and 50,000 miles.
It has the following:
Euro headlights.
Euro front bumper with Gen 1 Zender spoiler.
Authentic Lorinser sideskirts and rear bumper.
Euro logs.
Period correct Lorinser RS 90 16 inch wheels that have been straightened and are true.
Rebuilt front end with new steering box.
New radiator and alternator.
Excellent paint. I painted it 5 years ago. No road rash or dings.
Tranny working fine except developed a leak recently. Needs a reseal.
Interior is very good. A few small plastic pieces are missing but nothing major. Good dash and wood.
Anthracite grey painted out. Single cat with 2.5 inch exhaust through a magna flow muffler.
Lots of expensive parts on this thing.
Hate to part out a nice non-rust repainted piece.

I would suggest that you sell it complete. I've parted a couple of SEC's and aside from the wheels and the lights, the rest of the car does not part out well because the majority of SEC specific parts are expensive to ship (hood, doors etc) and everything else can be sourced from a sedan for junk yard prices.

I even had a guy once show up with a pick'n'pull price sheet in his hand demanding that I match their prices. When I refused, he got mad and stormed off, once again proving the old saying that there's nothing cheaper than a Mercedes Benz owner.

With best regards

Al

I totally agree with alabbasi. Is very unfortunate what happened, but sell it as whole. Also you may want to start thinking of a price and post more pictures of it, inside and outside. If the price is right, maybe someone from our forum will be interested and buy it.

That sucks about your car Leroy and I agree with the others about selling it whole because as it sits now it "simply" needs an engine where if you parted it there would be a point that you'd have a stripped down car body that you'd have to pay to have hauled off as scrap. (yeah, it even crossed my mind about spare bumpers, Euro lights, the skirts but I have enough projects as it is). HOPEFULLY there is someone out there with a good engine, I know a couple of members here recently had theirs wrecked, this would be one way to join the Coupe Club

Curious on what you mean by " blew the engine. It has low compression, blow by and steam blowing out the tailpipe"...how did you determine that, milkshake under the valve covers? Compression or leak down gauge?

Pulling an engine out of a SEC\SEL is literally only 3-4 hours of work, its not too bad.

This is seriously nice car, what kind of $$ are you looking for? If you prefer to take it offline my email is [email protected]

Thanks,
Yasin

Yasin, you make us all want to be better men and by that I mean, better at fixing cars.

When I get back to the states I REALLY need to drop by and drool over your SEC. I just showed my stepson your YT video (not an easy feat here in China) and he said "That looks awesome enough to drive stupid fast."

@1783pictures - Thank you for the very kind words! You're always welcome to visit the Slow N Rusty Garage in Houston. In all the years restoring and building cars the SEC has had lots of highlights and some very low times as well, however when I stand back now and look at it or better yet drive it, it makes the effort and cost certainly worth it.

I have to give a huge thanks to this forum and the members as there were some great threads that kept me on track.

Cheers!
Yasin

I have an ironclad rule for my SEC. If you're driving it, I'm in the right seat. Unless it's my main squeeze. She's into horses, not horsepower.

Such lousy news. Sorry to hear it.
