In my case, it was the accumulator. Even at idle, it sounded as someone was taking a hammer to my car with the sound coming from behind the firewall on the driver's side. At speed, the sound was less obvious. Also noted, the ASD is pumped via a SLS pump thats exactly the same as the ones found on a 560. There are hoses that run from it. When the car was in idle, you can see the hoses react to the "knock" sound I was hearing coming from the ASD assembly.

Hats off to Dr. Grillz who nailed this one...received the accumulator ($98), installed it and bled the system all in less than an hour...problem solved!

Availability of ASR and ASD

A little info on the two from a 1991 article that provides good info. I have driven two cars with ASD (my 190E AMG and a 2.5-16) and can say that ASD is a great option to have and beneficial on snowy roads.

"ASD and ASR have been offered in Mercedes cars sold in Europe the last two years."
I think the cars available with ASD or ASR and when as mentioned in this article might be a little bit misleading.
Here's some other information I found on availability of ASR and ASD in Europe:

- ASD (presented at IAA 1985) was only offered for the I6 models from 1987 on.
- ASR I (presented at IAA 1985) was available only on the larger V8 models from 1987 on.
- Starting 1989 ASR II was available on all models
