What is the purpose of this part...

A001 140 62 60 - it is a thermo valve on top front area of the motor - seems to be sitting on what looks like a coolant bypass contraction of some sort. One of the vaccum lines from it goes to a part on the left fender behind the left headlight. What is its purpose and what is the purpose of the part on the "fender". Sorry for no pics, I hope this is clear enough for somebody who is familiar. Thanks in advance.

They are used for emission control. Once is for the EGR system and I think the other has to do with the fuel evap system.

Yes.

Foolio2 - thanks. I didn't have a chance to actually trace the vac line from it but from a quick peek neither one went to the egr valve or canister. I'll take a pic tonight and post.
PS
My apologies again for the lacking pick but photobucket is blocked at work.

Yep - number 5 it is! Ok, I am starting to get it now. #14 is the "mistery" part that I was wondering about. So, the other vac line from 5 goes to the EGR?

See if this diagram helps. I think part 79 is the one in question:
