New sound system

Hi,
I plan to change the stock sound system of my 1991 w124 260E with an aftermarket one, after some searching I found some drop in replacement like the ESX QE120 or the rainbow 4.7” speaker and others, and also found others like kicker 43DSC504 5.25” for the rear and the kicker 43DSC44 4” speaker for the front (would mixing the two kicker speakers cause issues?), I don’t have door speakers.
I have sony MEX-N5000BT head unit if I get either one of the speakers would I need an amplifier?
Now what do I choose? The drop in replacement or the kickers (Any other opinions ?) I’m really puzzled right now.
BTW I probably won’t add a subwoofer and just want to do it myself and have good sound quality.

4" speakers will be too small, so you'll need to fabricate a plate to fill the opening (any air gaps around a speaker make for /awful/ bass or midbass response).

I've heard of folks cutting the dash opening larger and squeezing a 5.25" but the speaker magnet often hits the crossbar under the windshield, and cutting into that weakens the structural integrity of the car.

If your 260E is a US model (aka '300E 2.6'), it should have the Active Bass system, where there are small woofers in the bottom of the front doors, these were powered by a small amp in the trunk. this system is often nonfunctional on an older car, but hugely improved the stock sound at moderate volumes, as 120mm dash speakers have very limited bass response (and 4"/100mm would be even worse).

You haven't properly outlined exactly what you want to get out of this sound system other than "good sound quality."

I squeezed in 5.25 speakers in the front and 6s in the rear. They both needed a little trimming to accommodate them. Try to properly seal the speakers to get their best sound.

LeftCoastGeek Opps, to the drop in replacement then off we go (don’t want any cutting or trimming).
I have the Euro model and no active bass nothing *sadness*

Sorry.
Okay now, so I’ll only put in a drop in replacement what would you recommend from the following(I know that there is no such thing as the best speaker):
ESX QE120
The Rainbows
And the CarPower CRB-120PP
Personally I’m leaning towards the ESXs.
And another question please, do you think that the HU (Sony MEX-N5000BT) will have enough power for any of the 3 choices? (If not I’ll probably get a subwoofer with an amp).

The head unit/ speaker choices are all a matter of preference. I can't/ won't speak to those except to say that, in general, sticking to established name brands you won't get a dud.

I put rainbows in the front on my wife's wagon, I have the carpower CRB120's in my cabrio, I can't really tell much difference. the rainbows were expensive(!), while the carpowers were very reasonable but had a long slow shipping time from Netherlands.

Okay then I’ll get ESXs it should arrive in a month or so. It’ll be a set of 4 speakers since my rear speakers needs replacing anyway.
Thanks everyone.
