Factory V8 steering

I was talking with a couple people today about v8 engine swaps. Mercedes and LS.

I brought up how on the non-Mercedes swaps I noticed the steering linkage seems to gets in the way.

My question is

When AMG or Brabus did a giant V8 swap what did they do about steering clearance? Did they use an oil pan that cleared the linkage? Did they go to a rack and pinion and relocate it? Does anyone have any photos of the undercarriage of a V8 W124 I can see to satisfy my mind?

Thanks in advance

Rusty

And if they went over to a rack and pinion what did they do about the angle of the tie rod ends? Did they also change the knuckle out or modify the existing ones?

afaik, AMG never swapped a V8 into a 6 cyl W124... they upgraded the M104 to 3.6L, they put larger bore/stroke V8's in 400E/E420's which were already V8, but I don't believve they ever wedged a V8 into a 6 cyl car.

the Mercedes 400E/E420 used the same sort of recirculating ball steering as the other models.

Am I understanding this correctly? Did the V8 W124 have a different firewall than the inline 6?

Have a look!

Shows the steering and bulkhead/firewall you were asking about.

yes, quite different. battery relocated to the trunk because there was no room for it under the hood. they only ever made V8 sedans, no coupes or wagons.
