Transmission woes

1990 300E in great shape, sat for two years, now running again when I bought it. I don't know the history other than it was apparently very well maintained. When I drive it doesn't want to shift out of second, I have to wind the gear out a little bit and then let off the gas and it'll shift into third. On the highway I'm doing 58mph at about 2500RPM, which feels a bit high, so perhaps it's not shifting into overdrive. I checked the ATF and it was still bright pink, although just a touch high. Would being slightly overfilled on ATF cause these odd shifting issues, or is my transmission just dying?

So from doing some reading, i've seen others having a similar issue. It wants to stay in second gear, and when it shifts it goes from third almost immediately to fourth. Replacing the K1 spring might help.

It could be a couple of things causing your shift problem. Check that the vacuum line from the shift modulator (driver's side of the transmission) isn't securely attached. Secondly, check that the Bowden cable is adjusted properly.

Report back and good luck

There's no overdrive in these 722.3 transmissions.

58mph doing 2500 RPM sounds right I think.

I have a 3.27 rear end and I'm pushing 3000 RPM at that speed.

Sounds very much like a vacuum modulator issue to me.

I'll admit I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to automatic transmissions. Every other car I've owned has been a manual, so this is new grounds for me. I already ordered the new spring, at less than 10 bucks I figured it's hard to go wrong. I'll search around for this vacuum modulator issue and see what I can learn. Thanks guys.

Honestly I'm a little surprised at those high RPM at highway speed! I would think it would be a little lower, to feel a bit smoother. Glad to know that's correct though. The car shifts into third and immediately fourth so quickly, I think I was just assuming it was only shifting into third.

Okay, so after work this evening I'm going to try to find and adjust the throttle pressure cable. Fingers crossed, that'll help. After that, I'll try adjusting the vacuum modulator (any tips there?), and then once my new K1 springs comes in the mail and I actually find a place around here that sells Dex 3 ATF (Walmart doesn't) then I'll install that. Assuming one or all of these fixes my shifting issues, I'll be keeping the car for my wife. If not, I'll just sell it cheap. I don't have a lot of spare time or spare cash right now, so this car definitely isn't my best bet.
