722.3 to 722.6 Trans swap, 1995 E320 wagon

So got the beast back from the painter and while I still have a spare car I decided to dive into the trans swap finally. Ive had an ofgear controller for over a year, just never got around to it. I also have a C36 AMG motor in the car.

I chose a 4 cylinder box to install figureing it would probably be fine for a while, and when it failed if it did then id swap it with a V8 trans, or just build 4 cyl box up to deal with it. Its a 722.695, so its rated for bout 245 ft lbs of torque, the 3.6 is 275. When it fails if it does a few more clutches where necessary should take care of it. 2002 C230 transmission. If you've done this swap beore youll know where I went wrong.

You can see in the pictures, the 'tilt' is off...the trans is tilted pretty far to one side, the M111 sems to be straight up and down. It was tilted to the point where it was a mother to get bolted up, and it wont go up in the tunnel. Good news though, the output flange was the same, and the torque convertor bolted right up. I didnt plan on geting it all done today, but it would have been nice to have it bolted in completly. Those 2 top bolts on the bellhousing suck! Also the dipstick tube wont work for the C230. One trans cooler line is already hooked up, seems af if some creative bending will take care of the other one too. And the shifter linkage im not sure yet how that will need to be modified.

So I need an M104 bell housing, I dunno if any of the eariler M111 bell housing have the right angle, and the M104 was only E320 and C28 in 1997? so Ive got to try and find an M104 722.6 bellhousing. So if I got the right trans it would have been in and done, not a hard swap, really...it bolts in. Hopefully after swapping the bell housing that wil take care of it. Then wiring, which should be a piece of cake.

The speedo is another one Ive given a lot of thought to. Ive decidede to keep it mechanicnal. Mainly cause there is a hall sensor in the speedo head and that signal feeds the HFM and the cruise control. I dont wanna deal with trying to recreate those signals, so it will get either a dakota digital ECD-100, or a speedhut speed box and a custom cable made up. That will be driven by the trans controller. The dakota digital is on the bigger side, but it's reliable and cheeper than the speedbox. It also takes a simple vss input, nothing special. The Speedbox is cool cause its GPS enabled, and has a VSS input, and its way smaller. It also has a much better resolution for slow speeds. But Ive have issues using them at work switching between the GPS signal and the VSS signal. Its supposed to switch almost instantly preventing any dropout of the speedo. We use LS motors in lots of work projects so the speed signal is pretty standard. But they were nothing but problems, speedhut couldnt figure out why either. I may just get the speedbox and see how it is, mainly for its size, it can be run of the VSS solely once its done a self calibration with the gps antenna conncted. And if it proves to be an issue I was actually gonna pick one up for my 59 bug eye sprite with a 5 speed trans and run it soley GPS. So it will get used either way.

So thats that, ill post an update at the next crossroads, hopefully ill have it done next weekend.

I have m111 kompressor engine and 6speed gearbox in my 190. I use instrument from 124 500e and a box from abbott. I take signal from the rear abs thru the abbott box to the instrument. That box is adjustable. There is a output signal on the instrument for the cruise control, ac, outsid temperature ++++
The instrument from w126 with v8 will fit to. I guess the new controller have a output signal that can run the instrument. If it is the wrong signal can you run it by a box like the one from abbott.

its probably a dakota digital sgi-5 or 5e, i also use those alot at work to convert signals. I could probably figure out what the output is from the hall sensor and do that...but i also then have to find the right speedo. right now i need the bellhousing more than anything so i can get this back on teh raod

I gotta look at the wiring diagrams for the W126 to see what the outputs are before I commit to a 126 speedo. This weekend im gonna hit the junk yard, there should be a few 722.6 cars there with the right bell housing. Not looking forward to pullin a trans at the junk yard...trying to decide is I wana pull the whole engine and speerate on the ground. Its a sale weekend too, so its gonna be packed..getting a hoist with a zillion people there may take forever. Ill prolly just buy a whole trans, and if there is a 126 ill grab a speedo

Also not all V8 124 cars had electronic speedos. I have a 400E speedo and its cable drive, Im pretty sure I pulled it from a 400E. Either way, another concern would be pulses per revolution...that would also have to be the same. Can I assume people have done the electronic speedo conversion on an HFM car and retained cruise and all that crap with no issues?

124 v8 do not have wire.
Just look at ebay. You see on the back of the instrument that they have that round pin for the signal for ac, temp ++++++

ALL V8 transmission w124 models have electronic speedometer heads. I have them on the shelf from 400E, E420 and also electronic heads - no exceptions.

HFM 320 models have Mechanical speedometer heads as do all other 124 models.

So I got a line on an 400e W124 speedo. The single wire is the output, can i assume the output pulse is the same on this speedo VS the mechanical speedo? All I should need to do is grab the wire from the connector on the hall sensor from the mech speedo and plug it into that single pin...
