Gear recognition device was gone... People call it a backup light switch.
That is why you could start the motor at N or P.
Once the device cannot identify your gear position, your neutral safety mechanism will prevent the starter to engage.

It is attached to the left side of your transmission belly.
A Simple plug-and-play DIY.

so this might be a long shot but, i also have a 1989 190e motor and transmission that i pulled out for the ls swap...and from what i am finding online, both transmissions are the same?? so if i am reading this right i can just swap out the Neutral safety switches??

It shouldn't be too hard to match them up or to read the part number on them both. You can also repair the bad NSS.

190E 2.6 (Chassis 201.029) comes with a 722.4 AT and this 722.4 switch wont fit on a 722.3 AT.
But some of the chassis did come with a 722.3 AT.
So you might take a look at your AT to make sure its fitting.

If you like to repair it, do it this way.
1. Open the switch plastic cover. Be careful not to damage it.
2. Locate its relevant gear contact pins and give a good clean or bend it a little bit.
So the both sided contact will be good enough to send its signal "strong enough" back to its receiver.
3. Lube its joints and seal the cover.

The fastening is rivet-type...so drilling might be a good method to "open" the cover....
Good luck.

Its easy; I've done it. Drill out the rivets and open it up and see what is wrong. Usually the contact surfaces need to be dressed. Then pop rivet it back together. Easy peasy.

If your fuel pumps do not run, you have a second problem.
