You already mentioned it but I would highly encourage you to pop open the valve cover and inspect the moving parts (cams, rockers, etc).
Just the look of what's under the valve cover will tell you a lot about that engine. See if there are any wear or scoring in the cam lobes. It is a young engine but you never know. All lobes should be shiny and new. I just had to replace my '89 cam/rockers/etc at 180K. They looked sad and in desperate need of replacement. My car was very well taken care off as I was the original owner.

Also see if there is any rust at the hose connections. Rust is another bad sign.....

Thanks for the additional input guys. Went and inspected the camshaft today and all lobes look good. The journal bearings have some very light markings that might be evidence of low oil running, but I don't think this is a major red flag. Photos below.

Rear main seal is on the way. Also decided to replace the valve stem seals for good measure.

I'll continue documenting here as I prep the engine for the swap.

Figured I’d update this thread. Did a leak down test on this engine and found a lot of leakage from the exhaust valves on a couple cylinders. Removing the exhaust manifolds revealed some pretty ugly valves; looked like the engine ran for a long time with leaking valve stem seals. I figured a burnt valve or two so planned a valve job. Dropped the head off at a machine shop and learned that the head was warped .016, which is too far warped to resurface. In my search for another head I found an entire running engine for not too much more than the cost of a used head. I’m now debating between pulling the head off the ‘new’ engine to send to the machine shop or just bolting up the getrag to it and dropping it into something.
