Lets talk airbags

So today I happend to notice, for the first time, that on my door jam is a factory decal with a date when my airbags should be replaced....that was 2008.

Needless to say, I have not replaced any airbags, I would imagine it would be a few thousand dollar proposition.

How many have followed the maintenance of this?

How many have not and have had the misfortune of getting into an accident and testing the functionality of an expired airbag?

Seen dozens and dozens of MB's from the 80's and 90's in junk yards with front damage with the airbag having been deployed.

Have yet to see one with significant front damage with the airbag not deployed.

I'll take the 30 year old airbag in my MB any day over a circa 2014 Takata airbag.

Good luck.

Wasn't there some MB campaign that cancelled the suggestion that the airbags should be changed out over some number of years? I thought that they ended up saying that the airbags are good for the life of the car and they no longer need to be changed out as they had previously suggested.

I feel your pain on work computers. One of many reasons I retired!

It's an image of a service information bulletin for all models from November 2009 that says:

"German vehicle manufacturers have checked the durability and functional reliability of the airbag module and have come to the conclusion that the airbag module does not need to be changed throughout the vehicle's service life". No mention of the "service life" time frame.

On a w124 the service life is likely 50 years+ if the cars are in the hands of enthusiasts!
