Euro 280ce Indentification Help

I am looking at a 1985 Euro (bought in Germany) 280ce and the HVAC controls are not the two round dials like I see on most Euro spec cars. Is this correct? Was the auto climate control an upgrade from the mechanical even on Euro spec cars?

Additionally, I know the cluster has been swapped out, but would the original have been the cluster with the tach (car is a 5-speed) vs the current cluster with the large clock?

Thanks

It was probably ordered like that, my '84 280TE has it and all kind of other add ons, like ABS, leather seats.

What’s the VIN?

Like the vacuum adjustable headlight feature on that.

I would think a tach would come standard on a manual equipped car.

My 280TE looks just like that, but I have a Tach.

I think I'll move on... I am looking for a W123 coupe and this 280ce came up. The M110 and 5-speed are appealing, but I think I'll stick with searching for the turbo diesel variant as it seems more original versions of these are available.

I’d take an M110 and 5 speed over a turbo diesel any day! Not sure why you think that 280ce isn’t original.

Not that it isn't original, just the car I was looking at needs new leather or probably MB Tex, rear windows don't work, AC not working and while a very nice car, I can get a nicer car for the same money in a diesel. Just not willing to pay a premium for the M110 and 5-speed, something I don't NEED.

I can look up the data card for you if you have the VIN. Auto climate control was an option on euro spec cars. The cluster definitely had the speedo and clock swapped out from a series 2 W123 from 9/79 - 9/82. I doubt this was done when the car was federalized because someone importing a relatively new Mercedes in the 80s would not have tolerated mismatched center caps on the needles and their would have been no need to have stuck an older clock in. Since the cluster has the pictogram parking brake warning light it would have had a metric speedo assuming the cluster housing and the warning light card is original to the car. Tachometer was always an option on euro gas models and was never available on diesel models.

I forgot to add the speedo is correct for an M110 powered model but is from a series 2 W123. Someone probably replaced it more recently because the odometer in the old speedo was broken like the original clock or someone wanted the car to appear to have lower mileage than it really does. Especially if it has a nice paint job and interior and the seller keeps pressing the fact the mileage is original.
