Are they cross-compatible with each other then? If I needed to, could I install a diff from an R107?
Simply a theoretical scenario.

Of course.

Quid pro quo

The W116 is no problem. The W126 and R107 diffs will fit if they are pre-1986 (e.g. 280SE and 280SL will fit, but 300SE and 300SL will not).

By implication, I'm assuming you're not looking to use V8 diffs.

PlaneCrazy - it's more than a name, it's a life choice!

I have done this, multiple times.
there is some differences thou between them.

as @PlaneCrazy said, anything pre-1986 fit physically between the vehicles, w115/w123/w116/w126/r107 the lenght and the widht are the same.
so width and lenght of axleshafts and driveshaft wont be an issue.
(althou the rubber/mount at the rear are turned 180degrees between for example a w115 and a w123)

The v8 differentials have a different yoke/flange, that is a lot bigger. 90 vs 110mm if i remember correctly.
Either you swap your driveshaft/cardanshaft coming from the gearbox to a bigger one, or you swap the yoke of the diff, (this is quite a procedure if you want to do it correctly, basicly total dissembly of the diff)

The axleshafts does fit between the different differentials althou different chassies have different axleshafts, so you take a 2.47 diff from a w126 380SE from 1984, and you can fit that in a w123 along with the w123 original axleshafts.
like that.

Also, the big v8 differentials is a LOT heavier, so you might need an extra hand to lift it back up there.

Daily: w123 om602 7.5mm 200whp
