Transmission sound question

Hi guys, it surely been a while since I read and posted on this forum. I've been awfully busy. But now I may have a problem, and where else would I go to seek answers?

So my automatic transmission on 1984 300d turbodiesel was shifting really rough for a while especially when I was gunning it. I just changed ATF fluid and filter and shifting became much, MUCH smoother. At the same time I am concerned now because I started hearing this faint whining noise when I shift from D to P or from D to N or from R to N. Not sure what this is, but I don't like it. Any ideas? I used Bosch filter and Super Tech Dexron III/Mercon ATF fluid from Walmart. I was unhappy to use this ATF but the store was fresh out of Valvoline ATF that I wanted to buy.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions!

Whining comes from the clutch/friction pack 9/10 times.

Did you drain torque converter?

Hi Nutz 4 Benz,

yes, I did drain torque converter. Amount of oil that went in was about the same that came out. I used oil changing procedure from MB service manual.

It this a bad thing that "Whining comes from the clutch/friction pack 9/10 times?" What are the implications? Thanks

Mine does a funny noise evert time I shift to N. At the same time, the rear end lifts a bit. I am sure the noise comes from the gearbox. Has been doing that since I got it and never felt concerned. Changing the fluid didn’t change the noise.

Now that you mention the issue on yours, I feel curious about the cause.

Mine has done the same thing for years. I don't even notice it any more.

The noise is normal. It is the clutch packs and bearings changing speed as internals start/stop moving.
When in D/S/L the transmission should be quiet as the only moving parts are the torque converter impeller and pump.
