Lower Radiator Hose Heater - Caution
So I've been doing some research on block heaters. Advice on the forum seems to be that the heater in the freeze plug is by far the best way to go, but is also expensive.
I was originally going to go for a lower radiator hose heater - like the kind Diesel Giant sells. However, just got off the phone with the manufacturer - Kats - who informed me that they don't recommend a vertical installation. Their heater is supposed to sit horizontally, with the bulb pointed down. Problems when the unit is vertical- air can get into the unit, even after the system has been bled, and the thermostat in the device has lower accuracy (by 5-7C). Several people have complained about burnt out hose heaters - this is the cause. Note that this caution doesn't apply to other manufacturers - like the Zerostart hose heater.
Figured that would be useful to other folks thinking about heaters.
