New Car with a problem (maybe)

Hey guys- I picked up a new car on Friday to take my mind off my poor 300d. It will never replace it, but it will help. It's my first non-diesel/non-w123 mercedes. It has orthopedic seats with air bladders, power front and rear seats and sunroof, etc. It's a 1984 280sel euro with a little over 66,000 original miles. Still has all the original paperwork, first aid kit, tools, tags, manuals, even the cassette-tape that came with the becker that tells you all about the radio and includes some interesting music.
...I have a question for you 280 guys- what kind of rpm do your cars run at 65mph? Mine does 3500rpm. I figured this was too high for fourth and that I'm not getting out of third. The w126 forum says this is normal. What do you think? Also, do you think the fuel filters would be the same as on the w123 280? I'm having trouble finding regular maintenance parts since it is not an available car on any parts websites.
...Anyway, I don't think it was a bad deal at $3200 (although, a lot more than any of my diesels!) Here are some pics:

That's a real nice looking car ! Please, just do something about those wheel arch trim pieces...

That engine speed looks about right. I have a South African manufactured (i.e. Euro) 230E, and at an indicated 125 km/h (I'm too lazy to do the conversion, sorry), my engine turns over at about 3650 rpm. I own a four speed manual, by the way.

125km/h=77mph. Mine would be doing a good bit over 4000rpm by then, and I'd think the bigger body cars would have higher gear ratios.

At 70, mine would be doing close to 4000, so I'm guessing my car is in 3rd.

Are you sure that wasn't second? My manual says my top speeds for each gear (with an automatic) are:
1st: 27mph
2nd: 59mph
3rd: 97mph
4th: 127mph

max engine speed: 6500 rpm

You should have 4 gears. Do the w126's start in 2nd?

Some W126s start in first and some in second. I'm not sure about the Euro versions, but my 380 starts in first and came that way from the factory. The 560s start in second, and you could either get a factory first gear start, or an after market for them. I believe the 420s start in second as well...

So my guess is, anything lower than and including the 380 motor should start off in first. Anything bigger than 380 should start in second unless you're really on the gas, or you're lucky enough to have a factory first gear start module or a Bergwerks module...
