Original German Paint

I am going to repaint my car its original Champage gold color, but I want to do it with the original German paint. It seems to be a richer color. Does anyone know how I might go about procuring a few gallons of the "good stuff"?

RE: Original German Paint

I had read that there were two OEM paint suppliers to Daimler-Benz for the W123’s back in the day: G = Glasurit and H = Herbert. MB uses PPG now also and this quality of paint is quite good. Many overseas also use Anzahl... btw, a local body shop says it costs them over $100 per pint for PPG! Ouch...[:0]

RE: Original German Paint

Volume-wise, 1 gallon = 8 pints.
My wagon is Astrasilber and it was painted with Glasurit... just look at your paint code (example: 735 G) on the data plate on top of the radiator - if it's a "G" next to the color code, then it's Glasurit ("H" = Herbert). I'm not sure how many total, but I have seen a body shop base coat a car with glossy polyurethane and they consumed less than a gallon... Remember, these pints are usually mixed with thinners and other paint chemicals anyway... depends on the body shop I guess...

Bump [:D]

We should sticky this thread

"look at your hood latch tag and look for one that matches any of the below" [:D]

Question about tag

I looked under the hood for the factory tag and it's gone. Is there another location for this info on the car?

Type your VIN on the Russin VIN decoding site and the paint code should appear. Yours looks like either Light Ivory (623) or white. There was a thread a while back about the color codes plus images of the cars. Astralsilber.de should have them too.

Was there more than one "white" used in '84? I have to paint a hood and about million touch ups. I'm trying to avoid a full paint till next year but I can't hack the chips and the valence under the front bumper, it looks like hell.

keep in mind that the original forumlation of paint has long since changed due to toxicity and paint techniques. many of the chemicals used in paint back in those days are no longer 'permitted'

the guy that I have lined up to paint my car says that my metallic paint could even have been lacquer. good luck with that
