Fuel sender removal

This must have been gas tank clean up weekend, however I wasn't adventurous enough to remove my tank. I did remove the sending unit and the screen, and thought I would post a few pics in the hopes that one day someone might like to see what they are getting into before the actual work.
I have an '80 300TD, and the wagon tank is different than the sedan, but sedan owners will get the idea. As a poster stated, the sending unit isn't real tight, so don't worry about buying that 46mm socket (or whatever size it was). Channel locks worked fine. My screen was amazingly clean, and the sending unit was crudded and slimey, but not super nasty. The hardest part of this whole job is figuring what to do with the old diesel fuel. I may put it in the tractor if I can figure a way to filter it. (I drained it into a large bucket that had a little cotton wood and grass debris.

sending unit

Hi. I have an 84 300td wagon and the fuel gauge just stopped working---My mechanic tells me that the sending unit is bad. Is replacing one a hard task? Any help from you would be appreciated. I am not that mechanically inclined.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The hardest part is loosening it. If you have a new one ready for replacing, it should only take about 10 minutes to swap it out. Cleaning and repairing the old one is a little more involved but possible.

Yes just remove the first aid kit and its directly under it. The sender in the wagon is in a different place then the sedan and coupes.

Mr. Funnel

Kind of a neat device.
