Did that even get built by MB? It looks so awkward - I never even heard of a 116 wagon other than aftermarkter mock-ups. Again - did MB really produce this car?

They were custom conversions. This example will need work, but they are very rare. Check the script "WAGEN" on the tailgate

Probably a Binz (an excellent coachbuilder in Germany or a Crayford's (UK) conversion.
Crayford's exported some to the USA. (see the US headlights and bumpers on it)

Fate of this w116 wagon?? - ShopForum

This curiousity would be worth restoring, I would think. This one might go cheap on ebay, as the seller doesn't seem to know what it is.

Looks like a Crayfords conversion ( UK coach builders).

I've seen examples of Crayfords versions in W123-280SE, w116-450SE & W126-560SE. All special orders.

What engine do you suppose it has? The seller has it listed as a "400-series" with a 6-cylinder engine. If I win the car and it has the 6.9, I may spontaneously break into song and dance.

It's a 4.5, according to the VIN.

Well, the seller thinks the fuel pump is shot, which doesn't bother me, but I am worried that it may be an ECU, or injectors, or a fuel distributor. It would seem to me that the car, which does run on starting fluid, must have an okay ECU if the fluid is simply being injected into the intake. If it is a fuel distributor or injector problem, how can it be shoddily remedied for a long trip? I can deal with the pump issue if that is the case. I'd appeciate any snake oil type remedies - starting to think about maybe hopping a bus to Vegas!
