205 70R15 tires

Looking for a new set of tires for my 280 SE 4.5. Car currently has Michelin Defender 20570R14's, which are no longer available. Has anyone had any experience with either of these two tires that are made in the 205 70R14 size:
Hankook Kinergy ST
General Altimax RT43

Thanks in advance, Eric

I have been putting the Hankook tires on all my Mercedes recently because I am tired of throwing away Michelin tires because of age. I have been very happy with them for the price. In fact, I am sitting in Discount Tire right now waiting for them to install 5 Hankook Kinergy tires on my '71 250 (W114) and put Hankooks on my '72 280SEL 4.5 last week.

I have 195-75's on now. Had 205s and they always looked too fat for the car. 195's look perfect to me.

I think the Pirelli Cinturato CN36 was an original option?

Pirelli started making them a few years ago

I run hankook optimo 205/75-14 on my W108. I have them with the white stripe. $51 at Walmart. I put about 2,000 miles a month on them right now. I like them a lot.

If you want to try the good stuff and get the car handling the way it should again you can get these Pirelli from Lucas Tires https://www.lucasclassictires.com/20...057014CN36.htm

I prefer 205 70 R14 because they are the correct match for the car design. I did switch once to a 195 / 75 R14 and immediately felt the difference in higher center of gravity on a V8 W126 car. Your 280 SE is going to be a little different. I did not like the feel with 195 going around a curve entrance to a freeway. It did not seem to hug the road the same way. I eventually got use to it, but switched back to 205 70 R14 with the next tires and am happier with this size.

Yes, the car looks like the tires are old fashion, but it's original and I think the lower center of gravity is noticeable. Unfortunately, you cannot really tell until you buy the tires.

If you do decide to go with 195, I did like the quiet of the Yokohama Avid Touring S and I believe the rubber is Japanese. A deciding factor for me is not to buy Chinese rubber. Too many problem stories it seems. I prefer Korean, Japanese or Europe / USA based rubber instead.

Hope that helps.
