Bought a 1965 220SEb

Finally found one!

Actually, I bought it back in November. I've been working on getting it shipped home since then. It's here and I've started in on it today.

You can follow my progress on the blog I set up for it by going through its web page at:

Perhaps should be referred to as a "220SE." I believe the "b" designated the Coupe.

The "b" is for a sedan, it's just seldom seen. It's also lower-case (SEb).

As Scoot just described, the lower case “b” designates sedan. This was done to differentiate between the W111 chassis and the Ponton with the same (220SE) model designation.

I believe that there were some lowercase c models at some point too which makes things really confusing when you get consider SEc. Maybe the C was really only applied to w110, like the 190c. Then there’s the 190d diesel... correct? But I don’t think there was ever an “a”. Correct? Oh man... B through E, and S and L so many of this letters have double meanings. I tried to find the logic, but any attempted logic can only be applied to a given year. Clearly the logic of naming conventions changed with the times.

In the late 60s several techs that specialized in MB service used to joke that the "b" stood for bad. Seems they couldn't keep them in tip top shape for customers without regular visits to the shop. To this day I never understood why. Those same techs loved W108s but that could have been because they were newer.
Good luck with the new "b". Classy car.
