Just driven a w638 CDI 112.....

Hi all, I have just driven a CDI 112 03 plate, 80K miles and manual. And no, rust hasn't killed it yet.
Two things struck me - the gear change and the brakes.
Gear change was bloody stiff, a quick Google and this seems quite common. If it's new cables is it a DIY job ? Found some for about 50 quid each so don't seem too expensive.
Brakes felt bloody awful, hard pedal, very little feel, is this normal ?

The engine felt/sounded good, a lot quieter than my 56 plate Mondeo !
No smoke when I accelerated hard.
Seemed to drive quite well for an old bus so might be interested in it.
I think I'm right in saying they are chain driven and maintenance free ?

Anything else I should be looking for ?

Leaking injectors- fixable fairly readily. Electrical gremlins, central locking, warning lights.
Rust around windshield pillars.
The gears are stiff usually I think but the brakes should feel car like.
They are quite nice to drive- I have the older 2.3td.

as above... the brakes are car like in feel and ought to stop you very quickly.... does it have ABS? not standard but would be fitted on top of the left (passenger in uk) side inner wing.... biggish item with 6 brake pipes into it.

don't worry on timing chain... it would power a tank

638 engines commonly do 200,000 miles

fettling the gear change... 1st fit a "reverse gear repair kit" its not for reverse, its what changes cable movement into the gearbox, 25ish from merc (I've got a spare for 25 in the post)... only then worry about cables etc.... 15minutejob

if injectors iffy try cleaning off around them (back to metal) and replacing the copper washer with a new merc one (too cheap from merc to risk a dodgy 3rd party one)

I've got/ had a 108d and 2 cdi's...... most parts interchangeable between models.

BTW will be getting rid of my alloys and better tyres at some point

Good to know about the easy gearbox fix. What type of alloys have you got Malcolm? I’ve been looking at ML alloys which seem a reasonable option.
