Vito 638 speedo bad - why?

The speedo on my 2003 Vito 112CDi (non-ABS model) stopped working - apparently a common fault as they get older - can anyone here tell me why these usually stop working?

Is it only the speedo or the whole dash?

Just the speedo, the needle is just sitting on 160kmh all the time.

Could be that the speed sensor is defective since all else works?
Usually there is a gearbox sensor that tells the dash the speed, but I am not sure on your model how you can check that.

Thanks I don't know how to check it either but I'll have a look and maybe pull it out for testing to see if it's a coil or a hall effect pulse sensor or whatever it might be ... presumably the odometer operates from some other source because that is still working fine.

Before looking for the sensor at the gearbox end I pulled the speedo apart and squirted some lube into the plastic gears & ratchet mechanism - upon reassembly I found I had a functioning speedo!

After re-setting the needle position I found the speedo is tracking smoothly on acceleration but sticky and jerking back on deceleration. I'll just have to see how it lasts I guess!
