vito auto gearbox problem

Mercedes Vito 112Cdi from 1999 with automatic gearbox. Ever since I bought the vito it has had a gearbox fault. When accelerating the gears change fine, not totally smooth but Ok considering its driven 480.000km. But if I drive at a constant speed it feels like it can't quite decide whether to change up or down or stay in the same gear, so it just constantly changes between them. For example 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd and so on. Kick down works fine and it accelerated great. Over 80 km/h is no problem as it has reached the last gear. What could cause this problem. My local mercedes dealership say they have never changed the gearbox filter in this model... ever!! as it's not required. Can I change the oil on this model? I've heard some say it is not required to change the oil as it is fine for the lifetime of this particular gearbox. If that is the case, how long is a lifetime in Mercedes opinion? 480.000km ! I checked the level through the plug on the side and it seems to be the correct level. Any help is much appreciated.

Some instructions for checking and filling the oil level.Ignore the fact that says peugeot/renault/citroen, it is the same gearbox. Although your version will not have a dipstick.

It sounds more like an electronic control problem to me, could be that the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is getting some confusing information

http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Espace...0_training.pdf

If you are interested the operation of the electronics is described starting at page 111 in this document.

I would start by checking that all of the electrical connectors involved are dry and corrosion free

I think change the oil and filter if you think you can. Make sure sure sure to use the right oil ( i think buy it from mb ) at least then its right. Fill it to correct level which is at the middle hole while running. Mine popped out the shaft on paso side which caused many upsets, indicated by leak and visual aid. After you change the oil hope for the best because the gearbox is not great it seems i've been told. I have mine about 5 years and apart from popped shaft which caused leak which meant refill. I have no other complaints.

I'm sure I can change the oil and filter. However the filter is not a normal service item I believe (according to the main Mercedes dealer) and they have never changed the filter in this type of gearbox before. It's a special order part.
Seems strange not to change the filter when changing oil but thats what they say...

Hi
The filter is not accessible unless the gear box is dismantled. even the oil drain does not fully empty the box. However, an oil change is the place to start. What does the drained oil look like?
