ALL vitos / vclass 638 and 639 develop a problem in the gear linkage.... its not usually serious and norrmally easily fixed.

MB always call it 1st and third or second and reverse problems but in reality its a general wearing of the linkages.... on 638s its a gear change "cage" on the gearbox, whilst on 639s its more usually stretch on cables.

I attach full details for the 639 like yours.

what you need is a reverse gear adapter kit from a mercedes dealer..... you need to supply your vin number to get the right one..... its under the flap between the front right door and seat box.

the kit consists of a metal "cage" and small bit of plastic........ they normally cost around £25 (£23 to £29 normally depending on model) and most dealers keep them on the shelf as its a common fault.

its unlikely to have been changed since new.

the "cage" can be found on top of the gearbox with the cables coming through the bulkhead.....

I attach a "composite" of all the info on gearchange on a manual box... you need pages 6 & 7..... its fixed with 2 bolts and takes under 1/2 hr complete (my FIRST one took 15mins)

the composite also contains the info on adjusting the cables..... it shouldn't be necessary but I've come across garages that spent hours adjusting cables (and charging £100+) rather than actually fixing it.

I recommend buying a couple of "tab washers" that secure the cables..... they are very cheap but it is common to lose one or find they're badly worn........ they might need ordering but that normally only takes a couple of days.

Hello guys,

Let me use your topic instead of creating a new one with the same contents.

I have a 638 Vito 108cdi. Shifting to rear gear was always hard, but now it became extremely hard, so I suppose I have that common problem with the reverse gear selector cage and I want to change it anyway after 270K km passed.

The problem is that the local dealer is absolute shit - they have always been arrogant, but now they have passed all limits. They even told me they do not supply these parts. As I saw at some other similar topics the people have already ordered such part and I need the parts marked 5 (A 0002600437 LEVER, reversing lever parts kit) and 11 (A 0002651249 SLIDE) on the attached diagram.

Can anyone please show me an online shop or ebay or something where I can order these parts from UK or assist me to order from some of your MB dealers?

Regards for always being helpful,
Alex

there are several variants of the reverse kit (I wish they'd call it a gear selector kit as it applies to all the gears)

give me your vin (under a flap between the seat and door.... normally the front right hand door) and I'll supply the part number for your vehicle.

I cannot get into supply but ciceley commercials can be found on ebay uk and would be worth asking.

I can confirm the parts required are for VSA63819413232619

Reversing Lever parts kit A0002600437

ALL the parts needed are in the kit.... basically a "cage" unit and a plastic slide part.... NO other parts are normally required..... about a 15 to 30 minute job

stores.ebay.co.uk/Ciceley-Mercedes-Benz is my local dealer and if contacted through ebay will probably be able to supply and post to you (they list international post by arrangement on the site)

the "cage" is on top of the gearbox with 2 linkage cables going through the bulkhead.... carefully unclip them (they pull off or lever with screwdriver) and its held on with a couple of bolts vertically into the gearbox (its easier if you wash off the top of the gearbox first)

(I can't guess why they always recognise me)

Hello Malcolm,

Thank for your help till now. I finally found and replaced the cage unit and the plastic slide part.
However the van doesn't have much improvement for the reverse gear - the selection of the gears is much better now, but almost every time when reverse gear is selected when I release the clutch a "grrrr" sound appears and it didn't work. I have to switch to neutral then try 3-4 times before it successfully changes to reverse gear.
This happens only when try to switch to reverse. All other gears 1-5 work very good.

Any suggestions? Maybe the linkage cables (but the other gears work fine)?
Maybe the clutch itself, but I don't see any obvious problems with it ...

Thanks,
Alex
