V230 Ambiente (W638) Gearbox Problems

I have recently had a new clutch fitted to my 1997 V230 Ambient.

When the car went in, the gearbox was working fine ( for a V Class ! ) apart from a reluctance to go into reverse ( especially on cold mornings )

Since the new clutch has been fitted it is now impossible to even find reverse gear, let alone get it in to reverse. The same problem applies to 2nd and 4th gears. We have taken the car back, but the garage says it can find nothing wrong. My comment to this was "We had five gears and reverse when the car came in, now we only have 1st, 3rd and 5th gears so you must have done something wrong"

The garage is telling us that all gears are selectable when the top of the gearbox is off, but not when they put the top back on. They say they have checked the gear linkages and selectors and can find nothing wrong with their work.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be ?

Sounds to me like the problem is your mechanic mate... i'd take it back to them and tell them to let you know when it's fixed because i'm sure you're not in the habit of driving around with the top of the gearbox off.

Not your problem, you paid them to do a job and it's not done.

Hope you get it sorted

Gordon

Zenedge, Hang on. They have to remove parts to change the clutch, If they are in a bad state of repair, or are damaged when removed ( Which can happen just by removing a 13 year old part) is that the garages fault? THey have changed the clutch, and if that is correct they have done there job!! Im a mobile mechanic and have had the " It worked when it came in, now it doesn't" line a few times even for stuff that is in no way attached to what I had fixed! -- I must state im not having a go, just giving the garages/mechanic point on it! :P

Anyway, I reckon it could be something to do with the Little plastic bushes that are in the gear linkage, or the cables. if the box shifts fine then thats all it can be. If they are worn then they need replacing! Removing and refitting has obviously disturbed them there fore making it problematic!

Get them to replace this bit on the gear selector - MB part Number A000 265 12 49 - SLIDE

Hi Mark ....Thank you for your post.

I do agree to a certain extent with your comment regarding the garage / mechanics responsibility. However, what really 'whacked me off' in this particular instance was the fact that the garage did not inform us about the problems they encountered with the gearbox after they had fitted the new clutch.
They allowed my wife to drive away the car knowing that the reverse, 3rd & 5th gears could not be selected. To be quite frank, I think this is disgusting behaviour, particularly as we has just parted with £1500 for the priveledge!

My wife encountered unnecessary inconvenience and the costs of a rental car due to this garage being inconsiderate and 'economic with the truth' . The very least they should have done was to have contacted us to let us know there were problems with the gearbox, before they allowed us to take the car away from their premises.

The car has since been returned to the garage ( with an AA escort ). The garage has magically restored the full funcionality of the gearbox, informing us that all they did was to 'lubricate' the linkages ? They even informed us that that had to push the car backwards into its parking space, so that when we picked it up it the first time, it would be facing forwards! Did they think we wouldn't notice that half the gearbox was not working ?

The bottom line is that this garage will not be seeing the colour of my hard earned cash at any time in the future.

sounds like you need a "reverse selector cradle" its the bit on top of the gearbox that has 2 heavy cables attached to it (the gear lever cables)

don't mess around - change it .... 2 bolts hold it down and the cables push on / off... about £23 from merc for the part and 10 mins to change.

I'm surprised the clutch guy didn't fit a new one --- ask him to do it if you pay for ( supply ) the part.

Hi Gordon.....Thanks for the post.

The problem is now sorted, see my reply to [email protected]

I have heard some 'stories of woe' concerning garages, but you couldn't have made this one up !

Mark,

I totally agree with what you're saying and if that was the case here i'd have kept out, but it did seem from the original post that the garage handed the car back and washed their hands of it with no additional info.

You'd expect a decent repair place to at least say something along the lines of "this broke whilst we were doing it" or a phone call to say "we can't finish this job because X needs doing at the same time"... even at worst, the bill has gone up a bit mate coz we needed to do this extra bit of work" not just pap it out faulty and hope it doesn't get noticed.

The fault that it left the repair place with is quite clearly connected to the job it went in to have repaired, and it came out worse (does that make sense)... that's not the sign of a good vehicle repairer if you ask me.

BTW, no offence taken or intended. I do get your point, i just don't think it was the case here.
