Moab (generic)

The wife and I were on a road trip out to WA state and on the way back, we decided to just cruise through Moab. Now, I only live about 2 hours away from Moab, but haven't been there or wheeled there in a while (yeah, I know - sad...).

It was on a Saturday, so I figured there would be some crowding, but I wasn't ready for what we found. Even though 'the kids are still in school', the crowds were unbelievable ! There's a new parking area and campground (well, new to me...) at Gemini Bridges road on the way into town from the north that was just packed, the line for Arches was almost out onto the main highway and the crowd on the road in town was wall-to-wall. It appears to mostly be tourists and side-by-sides (which can evidently be street licensed in UT), although it was 2PM and real wheelers would be out on the trails.

I had read an article in the Salt Lake newspaper a few weeks ago concerning the "over selling" of Moab and now I see why people are upset. I wonder where guys who actually LIVE in Moab go to wheel now, since they would be standing in line to wheel anywhere near town.

Moab is great but weekends do tends to be pretty busy.

A group of us from Las Vegas typically go every year first week of September. Great temps, high of 90Fs and out of 10 days we get 1 day of rain. On the holiday weekend it is a zoo but we are usually out on the trails or in camp and avoid the main street "experience".

As far as wheeling the trails are awesome and there usually isn't lines on the trails unless you doing the easy stock rig sort of stuff. Head out to Pritchett or AreaBFE and you won't see very many people. Of course this year AreaBFE is closed so we'll have to see what happens. Trails like the Trifecta are so long even with a large number of people on the trail you may not see anyone for hours and there is enough room on most that you can pass a group and get on your way.

The SxS crowd is growing but in some cases they have replaced the quad riders of 10 years ago. Some are mindful 4x4 users that downsized from a Jeep or crawler but many are first timers that have no sense and see a hill and just try to blast up it even if there is no trail there. As 4 wheelers we used to all stick together to try to educate and keep trails open but I heard there is now a movement by a Utah 4x4 club that is trying to ban SxS in certain areas. We'll have to keep a close eye on that.

The tree huggers keep trying to close Moab to offroading to keep it open to hikers and bikers only but like you guys mentioned Moab would shrivel up and die without the offroad communities income. I know every year I go I'm about $1500 for a 10 day trip in buggy fuel, food, vehicle parts and camping. I don't think a hiker or biker will be spending anything close to that on granola bars and gatorade.
