If you posted a close-up, sorry but I cannot see it - the internet in China tends to filter out random stuff at times

I did go back to the Clubsmartcar site and eventually took a look at the thread that the photo came from. Took a while to find it as the accident was in Taiwan and not Korea as I had thought. I can send you the link if you want as there was some interesting dicussion and links in the thread. Unfortunately with time the photos and the links seem to be broken now.

I know this thread is old, but for anyone who sees this thread, heres my experience:

I wanted a car that got over 40mpg, had a convertible top and was under $20k (small payments). The choice was clear. I live alone and have no need for extra seats and could care less what strangers think. I considered a motorcycle, but I knew i couldn't handle cold winters. The smart gives me heat/AC, plus i get airbags. Also the car is compatible with Super MB Star diagnostics.

Also 99% of anything I buy will fit in the hatch or with the passenger seat folded down, otherwise i take the e-class or for rare occasions, rent a truck.

Im still trying to get over the $25/week fillups. After looking at receipts, its achieving 42mpg average per tankfull.

My older one has 210,000 km on it, (131,000 miles) and has averaged about 60 US MPG over that distance. It's a convertible with all the mod cons like cruise, heated seats, electric mirrors, ipod connection etc, very entertaining to drive on a twisty mountain road with the wide wheels and tires - it's a great car. We've had it almost 7 years. If this is the "worst" car of the decade, it would be interesting to see what would have been better.

Any article printed or posted online claiming some car, motorcycle, stereo, etc. is the "worst" or "best" is just the opinion of one person. Just because they are published, does this mean that they are all-wise and all-knowing? Haven't we all had friends who thought their opinion on some subject was the last word, we believed them, to our eventual detriment?

Example: I remember reading Consumer Reports magazine--they described the handling of the Chevrolet Chevette as "poor". I had one, with good tires and heavy duty shocks, that I commuted in over some nice, twisty mountain roads. That car always went just where I pointed it, and my biggest complaint was that it was underpowered. If the handling was poor, I'd have loved to try something better!

If I had the money, I'd love a Smart. 98% of my driving is one or two people, only carrying at most a weeks groceries. It's kind of a shame they don't do quite as good on gas as my Geo Metro, however I wouldn't hold that against it. If I could get the diesel version here in the land of the free and the home of the brave...

Safety? The Smart is a lot safer than my Geo. The Geo is probably safer than the Chevette was. The Chevette was FAR safer in a crash than my first car, a 1960 Corvair. An interesting (at least to me) local junkyard currently has a '60 was in a front-end crash. The floor of the trunk split away from the wheel well (they are normally welded together) on the seam. Made me really glad I no longer drove THAT car! However...any of these cars are safer in a crash than any motorcycle! And that's from someone who misses riding his bike!

The report was obviously written by somebody who had not owned a Smart for any length of time.

On reading the January 2000 issue of Diesel car magazine here in the Uk it had a feature on the old 450 Cdi and how it had achieved 3 Litre status of 94mpg, and was the cheapest to buy 3 litre car ie a car that consumes 3Litres or less per 100Km.

After reading the article which i kept i desparately wanted a Smart Cdi but Merecedes took ten years to introduce a right hand drive version to the Uk.

In March 2010 i took delivery of a Black & Silver Passion Cdi and cannot think of any other car i would like to own.

ive had a few initial problems with the car mainly to do with insufficient turbo boost but thankfully these have now been corrected and the car is great fun to drive and own.

The majority of people who do not like the smart complain about the gearbox but i see nothing wrong with it, it works and if you judge the revs correctly changes like any other manual car.

The big plus about Smart Cdi ownership is the economy.

Last year with 21,432 on the clock i managed a genuine 91mpg during a long motorway journey to the NE and with no car tax to pay and cheap insurance why would i want to own another car.

Its all about whether you like or dislike a particular vehicle.

I am not a great fan of the BMW Mini and much prefer the stunning Audi A1 which is a proper car.

You want a Smart because its different and puts a smile on your face everytime you drive it.

The suspension is firm, the gearbox to some is useless and the ride is choppy, well all those are the reason i love my Smart and the fact i waited ten years to take ownership only proves the fact that its a brilliant little runaround and if i ever change my Smart it will be for another one.

I always look at the credibility and knowledge of a writer before even considering what was written by them. The 2 guys that wrote this on are Mike Hanley and Joe Wiesenfelder.

They get paid on the quantity of articles and not quality since they are not world renowned experts.

They listed the smart among many others.

The true measurement of popularity of a car is what it will bring at a car auction like Manhiem and Adesa, which I watch closely.

Smarts bring higher ratios than many other Japanese cars when you divide price by MSRP.

Net: what they wrote is just noise and filler for internet pages. Means nothing.

The smart is a genius design. I personally met Thomas Hayek in the nineties who was a true genius.

My team at IBM worked with the MB team in Sindefingen on the MFG systems and configuration algorithms of the smart, in addition to the off board diagnostics systems used in dealerships worldwide.

I own a 1987 Chevy sprint (same as geo metro) with a 3c cylinder 1000cc motor. It gets 50MPG without a problem more if i drive 55mph. Its twice as big and twice the cargo room. Parts are dime a dozen and anyone with a brain can work on one of these simple cars. Sure you can have all the air bags. and crumple zones in the world but they don't prevent accidents.Think about this, my car is 26 years old and gets the same if not better mileage, cost a fraction to maintain, license, insure. Are we really advancing in engine design if a 26 year old car gets the same if not better mileage as a smart car or even a Toyota prius? I would also like to add my car has factory A/C because for some reason everyone in the world thinks Geo Metros did not have A/C

Interesting...both my Metros have AC, and I'd say that about 90% (at least those in SoCal) have AC...probably one of those "options" that the dealers ordered on every car except for the one in the ad ("one only at this price"). Makes the car more profitable to sell, and where I live, it's just about a necessity!
Metros are just about the easiest cars to work on, right up there with my '81 300SD. Although sometimes parts for the Metro are actually MORE expensive than for the Mercedes! Go figure.
Back in the '80s, when I could afford a new car, I considered buying a Sprint. My dad tried to talk me into one. Should have taken his advice. Considering some of what I've seen with Metros, I might still be driving it...saw a Metro in a junkyard once with nearly 600k miles on it!
Back to the Smart...if I were buying a NEW car, I'd seriously consider it. I don't need much space, and the fact that it has no backseat is, to me, a benefit, not a defect! As for airbags and crumple zones, they may not prevent accidents, but they may help if someone else's drama suddenly becomes your own (do a youtube search of russian dash cam videos to see how easily and quickly this can happen!)
