I just can't imagine having any kind of collision with a semi.

But you look forward to a head on with a semi in your two star M-B 190!

Personally I think the article is way off the mark. I've had my smart for two years and still love it. I usually get 35+ mpg in town and it's the most practical car I could have wanted for myself. The only thing I might trade it for would be the smart mhd.

I get 32mpg city in my 190d, and I don't feel stupid driving it like I would in a smart car. Have no good feelings about smart cars. Just my opinion.

Only in the US people feel stupid about driving small cars. It has always amazed me how everyone comes up with these probabilities about having a head on collision with a semi etc... even though in the US the risk of being shot by someone is much much higher since there are approx. 300 million weapons around! My point is, let's put it into perspective people!

The Smart is not for everyone and it is not for everywhere. It is designed for city driving and at that it does it brilliantly. I have driven them on two occasions in Europe and after I first drove it I realized that it is much safer than driving a motorcycle in the crazy streets of Paris!

Unfortunately in the US small cars are considered embarrassing to be seen in, due to the old perception that only the poor drive small cars! Let's see how long that perception will last given that gasoline prices are expected to keep going up!

I've owned an 88' 560SEL, now I own a 63' Unimog 404 and a 08' Smart 451. Having a Unimog and a Smart in the same driveway looks a bit insane but each serves a directly designed need. I love the Smart for it's mileage, comfort, agility, and cost. I commute a rural highway with fully loaded logging trucks every day and I've never worried about my safety. I've always said the Smart is not a fully versatile vehicle that suits the majority of peoples needs, but it's an awesome 2nd vehicle for a family where one spouse commutes to work daily and where a quick run-about car is handy on the evenings and weekends. In our 4 vehicle household the Smart get's the most use because it's fun, inexpensive to drive, and maneuvers into places other cars would never fit.

Here's mine: someone who would "feel stupid" because of the car he is in, has some self-worth issues.

I get 60 MPG US overall in my convertible (only over 110,000 miles so far, it could get better) and I couldn't give a rat's ass whether anyone else thinks it, or I look "stupid".

I would love to have a UNIMOG U100L in my driveway to complement my two diesel smart convertibles, other Benz and my classic Peugeot 404 C.

Aplogies, I know your reply was a long time ago - but - you don't have to imagine anymore! I found this in my Smart records.....

The guy in the Smart survived (albeit shaken, stirred and with a few broken bones) when the semi jumped the centre divide at about 70mph, and the Smart Car in the opposite fast lane hit it. You can see the dent that the Smart left in the semi! The collision was in Korea somewhere.

The thing that saved him was being in a light and relatively stiff vehicle that used the truck as a crumple zone and then bounced off. In a much bigger vehicle such as your Silverado or my previous Silverado/Duramax with its 6900 lbs of mass we would have ended up with the steering wheel where the drivers head should be.........

You can never plan your accident, you just have to hope that you are in the best car for the ride......
