Smart CDI fuel consumption

Hi All,
I'm new to the forum and have had my Smart for about 3 months now.
It's a Fortwo CDI Pure with a/c and the CD autochanger.
Great fun and now, I have already completed about 2500 miles here in the South of France.
I wonder if anyone else has a similar vehicle? I am looking to see what fuel consumption you are all getting.... I am averaging around 55-62mpg (imperial) which is about 30-40% down on what I would expect, according to the publicity blurb.
I have tried short-shifting up through the box and don't use the kickdown so am not thrashing it... Any ideas??

Thanks for any info!

We really have not been watching the "exact" fuel consumption - although we are about the same MPG

Equals 1 liter per 26 km at best.... that's pretty normal for a Smart CDi doing more than just cruising on the autoroute at some 100 - 110 kilometers per hour.

Angry Smart cdi fuel consumption

I purchased my Smart Cd1 on the 18 Dec 2009. It has done 1534 miles and is returning an average of 53 mpg. What ever happened to the 88 mpg they advertise for this car. OK I know this is done under ideal condition but I would be happy with 70 mpg.
I am so disappointed that I have booked the car in for a diesel consumption check on 9 March.
I will post the results on this forum when I get them.

My 450 cdi (the 2005 model) has a lifetime average of 72 Imperial MPG over 152,000 km. My other smart, a new cdi (OK it is a 2006, with only 6000 km) is returning about 75 Imp. MPG in my normal driving since I got it home, so far...

The 451 cdi that is now also sold in RHD in the UK apparently burns about 7-8% more fuel than the 450 cdi in real world use, according to the data at Spritverbrauch berechnen und Autokosten verwalten. This is at odds with the official fuel consumption figures, which gove about a 1.5% edge to the 451 cdi.

Driving on the highway above 110 km/h will kill economy as will fast acceleration (well fast for a cdi). Drive very gently and the official figures are in reach.

Smile Smart for two cdi poor fuel consumption

I said on the 3/2/10 that I was only getting around 53 mpg which I thought was totally unacceptable and that I was booking my Smart in for a diesel consumption check.
This I have now done and Sytner who service my car said I should be getting around 600 miles per tank rather than the 420 I was getting.

Sytner have told me that this is a known problem by Smart and by replacing the Transponder and Coupling will cure the problem.

So all you out there who are getting poor mpg, take your car to your servicing garage and tell them that this is the problem which Smart are aware of.

Good luck.

Mike

I have had my 450 CDI for 4 years now and have done about 65,000 km with it, average fuel consumption has been 4.05 litres per 100 km or 70 mpg UK gallons. My best tanks of fuel have been 3.7 litres per 100 km which equates to about 76 mpg imperial. Daily drive is typically 50 km each way - 40 km through the countryside and 10 km in town. I do between 80 and 110 kph depending on the traffic in the countryside.

In the winter in Ontario Canada the fuel consumption takes a significant hit of about 5 - 10% too, so I never saw the 3.7 number in the winter months when it is around -10C -25C.

Update: the 2005 smart now has 204,000 km and a lifetime average of 3.96 L/100 km.

The 2006 BRABUS Tailor Made in white has almost 30,000 km and a lifetime average of 4.17 L/100 km (and dropping with time).
