Canadian SmartCar in September

i had a chance to preview the cabriolet this weekend at the MBCA tech session in Toronto.

2 models will be available for canada in september of 2004. the fortwo CDI and the fortwo CDI cabriolet. prices are $16,000 & $20,000 canadian respectively. it has passed canada safety test will flying colors. we would have had it 18 months ago if it wasn't for the slight increase in emmission caused by the A/C. it will be sold through local MB dealerships. it will come in 3 trim levels; Pure, Passion and i forgot the 3rd one. it was also mentioned that there may be an option for removable body panels so you can change the color at will. it will be ESP & ABS equiped.

the national rep confirmed that there is no plans for the USA.

one of our members who drove one for a week said it is a major chick magnet.

I too am very frustrated at MB's attitude that "America Wants Another SUV"!

http://www.kron.com/Global/story.asp?S=1785502
BOSTON, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- smart, the global automotive brand that is revolutionizing the design, production and marketing of premium small vehicles around the world, will launch in the United States in 2006 with a new type of SUV -- a smart utility vehicle. Called the smart formore, the first smart to be sold in the U.S. market will feature four-wheel drive and be suited to all roads and driving conditions.

IMHO, the SUV market is flooded! We don’t need another SUV, especially one that is about the same size, one that gets a little better gas mileage, one that is about the same price, in other words, MB is trying to introduce a “ME TO vehicle to compete with the “CHEEP (read in less than $35,000) SUV’s.

Unfortunately, at this time the answer to most of the emails we receive is the same. The Smart car is not available for sale in the United States. But it will be shortly!

We need to get MB’s attention. Give Scott a call

RE: Canadian SmartCar in September

Here's an Email I sent to Scott, and his response.

Good day Scott;

I have read several articles that indicate the ForTwo will not be one of the first vehicles released in the USA. What smart is releasing is another SUV.

In my opinion (and many others) we don't need another SUV. What we need is an answer to the high price of gas/diesel. The ForTwo is that answer.

http://www.kron.com/Global/story.asp?S=1785502

Another frustration is that I cannot go and buy a ForTwo Diesel in Canada or Mexico then bring it back to California and drive it. (This is not the
fault of smart or MB, it's just a rant of mine).

If the FAA allows people to build planes in their garages then fly them (in the air, mind you), why won't the government allow me to buy a vehicle
that's been in production since 1998 and drive it on California roads? Seems to me a plane is far more dangerous than a production car.

Scott, what can I do to help get the ForTwo released earlier? Even better yet, how can I get hold of one?

Thank you for your time.

Get back to me in about three/four weeks. We are on the case. As you
understand, it is a complicataed issue.

Scott
