The Impossible Dream -
$20K buys many things, lets see, perhaps a low mileage 2002 SL500 Silver Arrow with a Pano top, (yes, the entire car with a glass hard top), or maybe a 92 to 94 500E with middle mileage in good condition, a lower mileage mid 2000 CL55 with supercharger, a low mileage SL600 in the 99 - 2002 range... the list goes on...
Or you could buy a beat up 129 metal hardtop in a crappy color with a bad headliner...
Seriously, think about it, when SL's are wrecked they probably don't have the hard top on, or the hard top isn't damaged. The ins com. totals the SL and now there is another hardtop looking for a home, or an owner buys a Pano, and has a metal top to unload... the metal hard tops are a dime a dozen, and who really needs one?? How many used 129's are purchased with out a hard top? Maybe a few, but far less than the amount of metal Hardtops looking for a home. (I have a Black w/silver int. metal hard top I'd love to get $500 for, it's surplus since I have a Pano)
Lets start a pool, I'll take the $200 square, and 6 months to find a buyer.
PS:I have the window sticker from my wrecked 99 SL500 that came with a Pano option, is was a $3600 option from the factory.
