Rory,
You are correct, the auxiliary battery is behind the passenger seat. Like I said in my post, " I believe the auxiliary battery is behind the main battery". That was my assumption by looking at the battery cabling around the main battery, without taking anything apart. I've had the cover up at one time behind the passenger seat, didn't take notice there was a battery in there, since you can't really see it too well. A nice place to put it, passenger seat doesn't move forward enough, a handful of hardware securing that plastic frame above the battery, doesn't look like fun. I will probably replace both batteries in my car in the next few weeks, since they are original. I'll let you know how it goes.

that little, mini, aux battery is behind the pass seat, pop off the top and front covers, and its under a hard cover with many screws.

Crazy - high tech $100 000 plus cars and the batteries can't stand a 4 week sleep. Definitely going backwards

Even see brand new ones on the show room floor with battery chargers attached - comes with package no additional cost!

Thor, a few questions if I may, to you or others with battery replacement and battery trickle charger experience.

1) Where are the charge points under the hood and has anyone connected the charger clamps/rings permanently and have the quick connect as on the CTEK outside the grill or someplace for easy connection for frequent hookup

2) What brand battery did you use for replacement and what part #or Group designation are the two batteries. I've had quotes ranging from $289 for large battery and $189 for small battery plus $200 install to $189 and $129 plus $100 install for Interstate brand. Don't know yet what quality level and warranty period these batteries are. Interstate seems to make at least two levels.

My batteries are 5 1/2 years old and have not failed. My car sat for a few weeks and starter sounded weak when started and car would not shift from park. Diagnostic tool showed P0562 error code that indicates low voltage and can prevent gear shift operation. I want to replace both batteries preventatively just because of age and want to get the best at a fair price.

In the current SLs, the charge points are the same as the jump start connectors.

Thanks, Rory. Can you give me some idea of where they are located (Drivers side, passenger side, front, rear, on fire wall) and what they look like (Battery posts, etc.)

Looking at your signature it is not clear what car you have. However in the R231 it is under the hood on the right side near the firewall or left looking to tar the rear of the car.

Press cover of positive terminal down (in the direction of the arrow) and turn it clockwise. To expose positive terminal , press cover down further.

Rory, thanks. I did find it in the owner's manual as well -- didn't think it would go to that level of detail. And thanks for reminding me to update my signature. You guessed right, I do have an R231 and added the 2013 SL550 to my profile. Also, glad you referred me to left and right side and not driver/passenger side. We drive on the wrong side over here.

I replaced both batteries in early Sept. 2018. $364.00 w/ tax from the dealer for both. My friend in the parts dept. gives me everything at wholesale. The battery in the trunk is easy, the auxiliary battery was a PIA. I elected to remove the rear cup holder facia and whole assembly, and piece of trim that goes along the side of the console to facilitate removing that plastic frame over the battery. Probably could have gone the other way and removed the large panel towards the outside of the car. I wish I had taken pictures, but at the time it was early evening and still hot & humid in east Texas, and I was sweating my ass off leaning behind the passenger seat. Not a fun task to say the least. According to my tech friends at the dealer, the auxiliary battery is there to allow the shifter to be placed in neutral if the car has to be towed. When I was replacing the auxiliary battery, mid-way I decided to put the top down, it did not function with the auxiliary battery disconnected, so that tells me that the auxiliary battery has two main functions, and probably more that we don't know about. Incidentally, the auxiliary battery has a vent tube with the red fitting that goes into the battery and the other end into the clear vent hose. When I removed the battery the red fitting fell out of the hose and disappeared. I was hell bent on finding it, and eventually did, and now it has a tie wrap around the hose, along with the truck battery vent hose too. I don't know why they made that battery so difficult to replace. Most things are thought out very well in MB automobiles, but this was a bad idea, all they had to do was modify the plastic frame and it'd be a 10 minute job. Both batteries were dated 52/11, (52 week of 2011), the car is a 2013. Tires were also dates 47/11, so they got changed too with original equipment Continentals. I did the oil myself this September and flushed the brake fluid too. Dealer did the state inspection, I renewed the registration, I'm good to go!

Thorgod, thanks for the detailed description. I think I'll leave the aux battery install to someone who has done it a few times. Charged my batteries and everything is fine now --just run down from sitting too long but I'm still going to change them preventatively. With batteries low, car would not shift out of park. After charging -- no problem. It threw a code -- P0562 that indicates low voltage, car will not shift from Park
