Command Replacement

Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'm about to dig in and replace the Comand with the kenwood Radio I already bought.

I think I got most everything figured out, but I do have one question:

If possible, I'd like to retain/use the original microphone. Does anyone know where I can find the mic wires and splice into them?

The car currently has the cradle in the center console and I have a Bluetooth puck. Are any of the wires in the MHI connector microphone wires?

The mic is in the rearview mirror. I've tried to tap into several MBZ OE mics for aftermarket hands-free systems without any luck. I was successful finding the wiring and tapping in, but the performance was terrible. I think the car's electronics has some sort of DSP or noise cancellation circuitry so that the mic just doesn't work well without using.

Hmm, too bad, I was hoping to use it, but I guess I'll just wire the mic that came with the Kenwood. Run it up the pillar, then under the top trim and to the overhead rear view mirror console.

Quick update.

I installed the radio and all the adapters and wires today. I have yet to connect the FM antenna and the CAN bus wiring, but the wires is already routed through the center console, I just have to open up the back panel and hook them up.

The GPS & Sirius XM pucks went under the center speaker cover, very easy to route, as there are 2 holes there, with rubber plugs. Pull them out, and drop the wires through.

Everything is working quite well (other than the FM reception and steering wheel control. As expected TEL, NAV and AUDIO all show ----. I was kinda hoping the NAV would still show the location in the cluster display, but no luck.

Tomorrow or Monday, I'll finish up the job. Here are a couple of shots of the antenna location and the (almost) finished console.

I know of no way to re-enable the MFD display for radio/NAV with an aftermarket system.

The reason I was thinking the NAV might still show, is because it's still an active device on the MOST bus, and because the NAV showed the location in the MFD even when the radio was off or when it was showing something else other than navigation.

If you removed the COMAND head unit, you removed the NAV unit. The disc drive in the drunk is just that - a disc reader. All the logic is in the COMAND unit. Also, the instrument cluster does not communicate via the MOST fiber. The cluster talks via the CAN bus.

Yesterday I tried to connect the remaining wires, specifically the Antenna and the CAN bus. Antenna of course works, but the CAN bus simply doesn't.

I verified everything, and I just don't have any steering wheel controls, no volume, no phone pickup/hangup, nothing.

Bu worst of all, I must have done something wrong, because I now have no heater. I was going to check for a heater fuse, but frankly I don't know which fuses are for the heater. While searching through the fuse charts, I found two fuses F55 and F56 labeled as "Stationary Heater", but they have strange labeling (Valid for code (228) Stationary heater: STH radio remote control receiver (A6/1). The rest of the "heat" labeled fuses are for the windows, mirrors and seats.

So, any ideas where to look? Could this be something I did when installing the new radio?

P.S. I should mention that the blower works, I get air, it just doesn't warm up at all. If I turn off the AC, it gets to about the same temperature as the exterior air.

I'd check the wiring on the back of the ACC panel.

Hi dudeman
I'm looking at doing something similar as the Comand system is so outdated

From your photo, how did you get the wood trim panel that matches the double DIN head unit rather then the Comand unit?

this could be a long correspondence so I'll give you my email if you are OK?
