Another Vario issue

Hey guys need some help. This morning while backing the SL out of the garage I started opening roof. I got half way out of the garage and something went wrong. The windows came down as normal but when the trunk started its opening sequence it started to raise up in front but it stopped half way through the sequence. The trunk is stuck mid cycle and pump doesnít run. I havenít torn into yet but does anyone have any ideas off the top of your head? The trunk didnít make it through the full cycle so I donít think itís a micro switch. I took a brief romp though the vario threads but didnít see anything that matched this scenario.

Also does anyone have the procedure to manually lift the trunk lid? Itís stuck about 10inches open so I canít get to the pump or anything in the trunk.

Mine did the same thing last year. I attributed it to a low consumer battery. I let it run a while, shut it off then started it again. It then opened all the way.

You can also try it with SDS. It will identify the problem for sure.

Since using a battery tender, it never did it again.

Ok thanks triple cranks, yeah I thought of that but the wife drove the car the day before so the consumer bat should have been charged. However the bat could be bad I guess so I’ll check that as well.

If you operate the top with the engine running, then the state of charge of the consumer battery is immaterial.

It doesn’t seem to be the battery. I was able to get the trunk open with the key so I’ll go from there. I imagine it’s something with the pump. There are no codes either which doesn’t help. What I don’t know is how to get the top back in place once I figure out the issue. Will it just go back in place?

The trunk lid/tubular frame may have quit as a consequence of low hydraulic oil.

The trunk lid is easily closed. Unlock the trunk lid and open it to separate it from the tubular frame. Push the tubular frame closed onto its locks and secure them with a 6mm allen wrench. Mercedes has posted a video on YouTube showing the procedure.

I have the opposite problem. 2008 SL550. The roof is open completely and won't close. I recently replaced the trunk latch assy as it was leaking from the big draw down cylinder. That all seems to be working. I tested the roof once i got the trunk open warning fixed with the new latch assy and it opened and closed several times. I also tested all the trunk open close functions i.e. door switch, trunk latch, mechanical release. Hydraulic assit was working fine. Yesterday, the top was opened by my GF as it's her car, and when she got home, the trunk would not open. The latch releases but the hydraulics don't open the trunk. I can manually press the trunk latch closed and the draw down works and clears the trunk open warning so I am pretty sure the replaced latch is working correctly. So, the top now will not close, the trunk won;t open or go to easy pack, and the roll bar will not go up or down. I have checked the fuses that are listed next to the Vario roof in the fuse list and they all appear to be good.
Anybody have any ideas? Is there a reset for the roof system? It appears to be a shutdown or failure of the hydraulics for the trunk and roof for several systems to be suddenly non functional. No dash alarms or warnings.

Right, so why glom onto this thread instead of starting a new topic? Whatever...

Perhaps the controller may not be receiving confirmation by way of switches that the tubular frame (trunk lid) has unlatched. See the diagnostic aid: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...ostic-aid.html. Checking the switches is trivial with a diagnostic tool; it can be done with a minimal effort using a multimeter.

So I got the trunk closed manually. Thanks for the instructions rudeney. Now I have the same issue as win, the trunk unlatches but won’t pull open. It closes just fine with the hydraulic assist. Top is completely inop, no dash warnings just hear some relays clicking when the switch is activated. The RVC pump is working because it’s pulling the trunk closed it just won’t activate to open the top or raise the trunk. Any ideas before take it to get it scanned? Might be my only option at this point.
