I'm coming over from the R129 Forum and I have a few pre-purchase questions.

I'm looking at two 2007 SL550s. One with 56k miles and the other with 28k miles. Both are cosmetically clean, non-smoker cars with clean Carfaxes. Both have services records but both have not had the ABC suspension and fluids serviced or changed.

I will check the ABC fluid for cleanliness (green! green!) If the fluids are dark I'll walk. Also, I'll visually check the airmatic shocks for leaks. The roof and other components will also be tested.

(Sorry for the long post.) Without using a scanner is there anything else I should look for before I take any one of them to my indy for a PPI? Thanks in advance.
I moved from a 1998 SL500 to a 2003 SL55AMG. I loved the r129, but I have to say the SL55 is a fantastic car! A different league altogether. To DIY you need Star, but that was also very helpful on the SL500. Regarding the 550 (M273), the early series had crankshaft balancing issues. Be aware.

Very, very well said bobterry99!

Although it can be pricey depending on the condition, just about any R230 can be made great again! Lol! That was a reach

My R129 500SL had a weird issue it took me a while and some reading to figure out, it was a V8 and had distributor caps, I would be driving along and suddenly it would start to run terribly bad. Went on for over a year. Finally I read on Benzworld about moisture getting inside the distributor cap. Mine were both new, so for a while I assumed that couldn't be the problem. Finally, I looked in there and that was the culprit! Couldn't believe it. The fix was to remove an insulator and put it back in with a bit of silicone as a seal. That was a wonderful car but the R230 is really phenomenal, a rolling technological marvel. In a month or so, I will be renewing my ABC fluid.

Please don't spill Champagne in the Mercedes.

I love my R129. It has been rock solid, easy to work on, and a general joy to own. That said, I don't think I can resist the pull of an R230 indefinitely. My desire to daily drive a V12 Mercedes roadster gets stronger every day. I admit that the negative hype around ABC causes me to hesitate, so it is nice to hear positive reinforcement from real owners. I have the DIY tools and skills to give it a go. Given my agreement with the wife to sell one before I buy one, it has been my procrastination to prepare and list the silver arrow that has been the bottleneck.

Test drove a beautiful '04 SL600 with about 50k miles on it. Since the dealer called me several times within hours and then abruptly stopped, I think it sold the day after I went to look at it.

Circa 2005 I thought the same of my 129 cars. But the one thing I've never liked was the jittery feel traversing poor road surfaces with the top down.

One day I drove an R230 with the top down over a road that I knew gave my 129 problems. Likely due to its extremely soft suspension design permitted by ABC, the 230 went down the same road with aplomb. I realized then that I had to damn the expense and replace my 129 with a 230.

I might have a buyer if you are interested. An old friend saw my car today and she fell in love with it. She asked me to keep an eye out for a roadster. She was not concerned with the power plant, just the looks. Let me know. I told her they are a dime a dozen these days due to the rediculous depreciation.
