I have a 2005 SL500 and I used to have the low convenience battery message anytime I let it sit for more than 3 days and would take about 15-20 minutes of driving to get it back up to charge.. The battery was less than a year old and was testing good. I bought a CTEX battery tender and ran the full 7 step process for reconditioning and charging the battery. I leave the tender plugged in anytime I am parking for more than a couple of days. I did park it at the airport a couple of months ago for 6 days and when I got back I got the message but only lasted about 20 seconds and went away. Seems to do much better with the recondition and regular use of the tender.

My car is in my garage and is left unlocked. I have not left mine longer than 10 days yet but no problems at that time.

One question to be asked: do people leave their cars locked and with the alarm system active?? I would ASSume that the alarm system draws additional juice.

Folks - I think I have an issue.. I typically go only one or two days even after having just driven a highway for 45 minutes. I have developed a theory like the trunk light stays on when closed. I am about to disconnect the light to see if this makes a difference.

My independent says he cannot see any parasitic current drain. Consumer battery is a new Bosch OEM one so we are good there.. Start battery seems fine.

I can't help wondering if our designers pushed the boundary a little too far to reduce weight leaving us with a battery which does not have the amp hours to support a vehicle with above average daily amp hour demands.

Love the car nonetheless!!

Its not the size of the battery, in fact, as far as Amp-Hour, and between the two batteries, you have much more capacity than the average car on the road.

If the battery is new, and never been drained completely dead, then you have a parasite consumer somewhere, WIS recommends using a clap style ammimeter (Amp meter) to measure consumption, and monitor it at several intervals after the car is shut off.

Once a consumption is confirmed, you move on to branches, at fuse boxes, and measure with the same method, until you find the culprit. The process is very time consuming.

Also, have you scanned the car? can you verify CAN bus is going to sleep, is it staying awake and keeping other electronics on?

Thanks Bayhas.. not wanting to fork the thread. my independent says he sees no parasitic current when shutdown. Only codes are regular occurrences of the same "Convenience Functions Only" code from what I have been told.

I may have to take this to MB dealer, get them to commit to an upper bound of cost to fix the problem (I doubt they would agree to that) and see it they can get to the bottom of the issue.

The issue in this troubleshooting I've been told is that you have to wait each time for the car to completely shut down to check currents which can take sometimes 15 minutes or longer, so it is a tedious process.

Put my iPhone into video mode and left it in the trunk... to confirm the light is going off as expected... it was...so ruling out that one area. There does not even seem to be a ligt bulb in the glovebox, likely because ther previous owner was chasing the same bunny trail.

I have been locking the car and also trying to leave it unlocked to answer the question asked above.. thinking it would shut down faster when locked, but the issue remains.. and it seems erratic,. i.e. locking it seems to preserve the battery a little longer sometimes, but then sometimes leaving it unlocked gives it extra life.. either way, I am at around 1-2 days max.

Lets talk numbers, Merc specs is <0.020A at idle, all components off, 20 minutes after door are closed and everything turned off.

If your battery is not new, time to simply get a new one.

If it is new, you need to trace excessive consumption, starting at the battery main cable, and then branching off to fuses.

WIS includes the complete procedure in details, but the issue is fairly generic, I propose another indy with better understanding of 12V systems, I doubt the dealer will be better than anyone else in any aspect of the job, other than charging you several grands for 10 hours of labor while they scratch their heads at it...

Tony, When you ran the full 7 step process (Ctek) for reconditioning and charging the battery, did you leave battery hooked to car, or did you disconnect it? I'm Just Curious.
